I think the value is largely situational based on opportunities that may exist in either summer or January. We got Lukebakio, Cucho, Cleverley, Dahlberg and Doucoure in the January transfer all of whom seem decent value. I know there are other players that could be quoted as offering poor January value but that’s my point they are not all one or the other.

In terms of summer transfer value for money we bought Andre Gray in summer. QED

The weather’s lovely. Not surprising we are in for a Cornet etc.

Could have sworn when we were interested in him he was a LW or RW. Now he’s a left back?

Just a hunch but reckon (if true) we’d bring him in as a LW, safe in the knowledge that he’s decent and hardworking defensively. I’m sure his versatility will be appreciated though.

    Wonder why?

Looking at his stats for Lyon, in approx. 14,000 minutes he’s played for them, he’s got 51 goals and 29 assists. That’s a goal involvement every 175 mins. So every other game he makes something happen.

According to press rumours over the last few days, Leeds have been chasing him, but they have been put off by the asking price of .....£20m

If true, that might just possibly rule us out.

I've no real information, but it could mean that he's considered a left wingback.

In which case, we won’t be spending considerably on him as that isn’t a shape we play?

If there’s truth to this, I suspect the thought would be that he’s an improvement on Sema whilst offering the versatility to be backup elsewhere on the pitch.

I also think it would further the idea that Masina might be allowed to leave.

Lyon fan I follow loves him and says whilst he’s done well at left back, he’s far more consistent and thinks he’ll breakout as a wide forward very soon

In my opinion he’d be a terrific addition.

Only one small downside is likely to go to the African tournament in January I’d expect?

Xisco loves left backs like Southgate loves right backs.

This could of course just be Duxbury winding Ivic up. "Remember when we left you with no left backs at all for half a season? Guess what? Now we've got four of them! And none of them are Toby Stephenson!"

Pretty sure we’re looking at him as a winger. No inside info but every season bar his last one he’s been a winger and he probably doesn’t have the defensive output to be a LB for a poor side like us.

    Based on what?!

I really hope not - he's principally left-footed and so wouldn't be ideal to be the left-sided winger in a 433. Plus according to transfermarkt he's actually played 72 games as a right-winger vs 52 games as a left-winger, which is unsurprising given that the modern game better suits opposite-sided wingers.

We could be looking at moving Sarr over to the left? I think it was the Senegal boss who said he prefers that side and is more productive there.

Based on common sense. Because we don't need an extra LB and do need a starter-quality LW and he has played many more games as a LW than a LB throughout his career and only played as a LB for a dominant side like Lyon anyway. The only thing less likely than us spending 20m on a striker or left winger is us spending 20m on a LB when we'll have Rose, Masina and maybe Doig too. When we were previously interested 2 years ago it was in bringing him in as a winger too.

Wobby says we're not interested anyway.

I think, if true (which I’m not sure it is - I suspect it’s his agent using our previous interest to ramp up interest elsewhere), that he’ll be seen as a utility player who can play in a number of positions to a sound level. Lyon seem to have proven that he’s highly adaptable. It could well be that we think he’s worth spending money on because of that versatility.

I don’t think we would be buying him with only one position in mind. As I suggested earlier though, I do wonder if it means Masina could be seen as a player we are happy to lose.

And yet he's played more games as a RW than as a LW - so it's not really "common sense". ;)

It would be weird on all counts if that were the case - firstly because we've been playing him on the right for two whole seasons now, if he was really better on the left then wouldn't we have done that already? Secondly because he was consistently doing pretty well on the right for us at the end of the season.

So the fact that he's played marginally more games as a RW than a LW (and over four times as many games as a winger than as a full back) somehow means my original post claiming Cornet was "probably coming in as a winger" - and not a LB is not common sense? How do you square that one?

Either way, the Wobby says we're not looking at him so it's all moot.

Because common sense would suggest that we wouldn't be spending a significant chunk of our budget on a right-winger while we have Sarr.

Sarr played more times on the left than right for club/country before joining us I’m pretty sure

Seems like an odd argument to keep getting into - especially now the issue is moot anyway as he is not coming. I would say that common sense would suggest that a player who has played marginally fewer games at LW than RW would be capable of being brought in as a LW (the Sarr example is instructive) but it really doesn't matter at this point does it.
