Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

I think it was on the Louis Theroux podcast he talked about 'managing my brand' - you can tell for him it's all about him now.

It's a shame, because he is a Watford Legend, one of the best players to have played for us. It's easy to forget just how good he was in the championship and in that first season in the PL.

People would have criticised him for saying nothing as nobody would have thought even he would be capable of such a car crash self-serving interview.

Footballing wise Troy would certainly be an asset in the championship.

Would be a good signing for Norwich or Bournemouth. But we need a new captain, someone who leads, encourages and challenges others, for a new era.

I don't think there's a future for Deeney here not as captain.

Going out on our sun lounger wearing flip flops and hanging a towel around the neck more like. I am sure there is a clique in the dressing room. This has to be broken up.

Nearly 9M per annum on two below par strikers in wages alone. It is unsustainable. Free some of those wages to get someone in who can actually play the part of the modern striker.

To be fair I assumed he was talking about the abuse that he gets from Aston Villa fans, which is quite a bit living in The West Midlands I seen plenty of Villa fans Deeney on social media pages on Sunday.

He was great in the Champo and he has turned in a handful of match winning performances in the last 5 years. But even during his 'great' first season he only scored 7 or 8 goals ftom open play. Id guess 40% of his PL goals were penalties. His goal rate from open play has been pretty abysmal in the prem. He needs too much time to tee himself up. But yes a great Championship striker in his heyday and made some big (albeit increasingly infrequent) contributions in the PL too.

Doesn't really stack up this story, they already have a number of big ********* strikers who are better than Deeney, it's in other parts of the pitch where they need reinforcements. Vydra would be nice to have back, but after a tough start up there, he's proved to be a useful option for them

Yeah, with Wood, Barnes and Rodriguez they'd have no room for Deeney at all.

cant see it , he is 32 and captain of the club , he has probably 2 years left and then will be looking for a media role or maybe management (has he ever shown any interest in management) , can anybody really see him going up north to sit on a bench and fade into obscurity, playing second fiddle to another captain

A much better story would be Troy sticks by his side and returns triumphantly to the prem after a year in the wilderness

I can because I think he has become little bit self centred and being the Prem would be better for his image and he will want the wages. I can't see the club wanting to pay his salary even if it's cut in half.

Also don't he still live in Birmingham?
    Birmingham to Watford 101 miles
    Birmingham to Burnley 120 miles

I am not sure the story that the story is true but I hope it is.

His latest Intagram post where he briefly references a "disappointing season" and then talks about Gomes, ends with "as for the rest of you who have waited years to hammer me the comments are coming in 3,2,1......."

For such a "big hardman" and someone who says a lot of stupid things himself, he certainly does seem rattled by any online criticism despite saying it doesn't bother him.

It’s really very odd. As a sportsperson or anyone in the public eye, deserved or not it’s par for the course. You often see C list celebs commenting about negative comments on social media and about trolling, but they’re mentally weak individuals. Professional Athletes are meant to be mentally tough and meant to be able to deal with the most pressurised situations. It’s really very unusual for any footballer to ever acknowledge online criticism, most will probably be vaguely aware it exists but not give it even a second thought. Troy mentions it alll the time, very odd.

    Typical insecure Troy!

Loves giving it the big one and yet when someone slings something back he goes and cries about it.

Has this c**t not left yet?

Give Hughes the armband next season. Apart from Sarr and maybe Dawson, Hughes tried. Even when we were losing badly he was driving forward. He cares about the shirt, something that has sadly become lost on Deeney as his ego matches his belly.

Stick him on the bench week in week out, and let him see how a new captain can push us forward instead of backwards.

The thing is, it's going to expose just how unfit for purpose our squad is.

Beside the fact that our first 11 was too poor for the Premier League, the weakness behind them meant there were/are no other options.

People may have been suggesting Pedro or Quina deserved a few more minutes, but largely, even though we were poor, our first 11 largely picks itself because the rest of the squad is so poor. Players here simply to have a base, or because there were no other clubs ready to take them on loan at this stage.

46 games means we will pick up knocks and suspensions.

Do we want to see Success and Peneranda become our main strikers for a run of games because of injuries?

We will have enough of a job recruiting first team players over the shortened summer, let alone assembling a squad suited for the larger number of games.

I know this isn't the thread for this discussion, but it worries me.

I'd say 'cares about the club' is just as speculative.

I don't think it's hard to build a picture of Troy's influence behind the scenes based on what we see on the pitch and what we read from the media. Of course it may all be wrong, but it seems unlikely.

Indeed, his own interviews give enough of an insight for anyone to make their minds up about him in terms of character and influence as a captain.

From a purely football perspective, he's slow, immobile and scores tap ins and penalties. If we pretend that we believe that he has no role other than that and that he just keeps his head down, does his job and then listens to who ever is the gaffer at that moment, then it's still pretty thin gruel.

Genuinely, without the customary cattiness/snark, it's abundantly clear at this point that there isn't a player amongst our squad that is as mentally strong as they should be, in the way you describe. It was probably our biggest weakness on the pitch (that wasn't down to outside intervention, like, say, tactical decisions).

This is just par for the course, and the fact that it's the captain and monolothic dressing room presence shouldn't really be surprising us at all; he's just leading by example.

I imagine some theoretical business/management guru could have an embolism/field day going into our dressing room and making a case study of how not to operate.

Based on Troy's interviews which shine a lot of light on his mentality, attitude and sense of self, I think Troy comes from a pretty dark place mentally. Perhaps something along the lines of narcissism. He has a lot of charm (ie the opposite of genuine/sincere/ integrity) he talks about himself all the time like it's all he thinks about. Mapps paid his bills while he was in jail yet Troy thanked him by publicly stating he is an extremely boring person. For me the biggest piece of cr@p I ever heard from Troy was when he said the reason he attacked the injured student he kicked in the head while he was on the ground was because he thought he had a knife! He expected Watford fans to believe that!! Troy made a big contribution to the club, which peaked in our promotion season, but in my view he's a narcissistic thug who should not be our captain. Gino made a huge mistake in witholding bonuses but I believe this was compounded by Troy's narcissim around the club which most likely undermined the mental strength and performance levels of the other players. That's how narcissists operate. Troy's failed leadership was laid bare this season. If he stays at the club we are in big trouble.

Nonsense how many other people have made mistakes in their lives, I know I have! Troy has been an excellent servant for our club he is 3rd in our all time top goalscorer list, last season really was our only bad season under his leadership.

    Translation:-

Troy Deeney is gradually declining in his ability and should not be a first team player and should consider moving on.

Despite the fact he's been captain of the side for 6 years, which during the club has got promoted, remained in the PL for 5 years, reached an FA Cup final and semi-final (all things I praise the owners for achieving) - I will relate his lack of leadership on the pitch this season to an incident in which he got into a fight and was imprisoned 8 years ago. Despite this appearing to be the only time he was imprisoned due to a fight, I will use this to describe him as a 'narcissistic thug' and discount his explanations as false - again, because of his performances on the pitch this season. I will use banter between two friends to support this opinion. For some reason.

I will finally relate his 'narcissim' (sic) to the fact that the owners allegedly did not pay due bonuses to the entire squad. For some reason. They are related. in my mind.

I won't mention his charity or involvement in the BLM movement as that will challenge the opinion that he's a 'narcissistic thug'. However, this would be just an example of his wish for a 'media career' which would mean he would appear on such TV shows as:-

    Match Of The Day (pundit)
    Soccer Saturday (pundit)
    Soccer AM (guest)

A glittering media career in the making.

You know he's only doing the BLM stuff to get his name out there, don't you? He doesn't give a damn. It's completely correct to call him narcissistic, it's the best description of him without a doubt.

I totally get the criticism that TD is still a constant first 11 pick and doesn't score enough goals etc etc.
I don't get the need to criticise his personality. Whenever I hear him speak he seems very intelligent, very eloquent and considered. He seems very grounded and the incident 8 years ago has made him grow up and appreciate what is important in life. So what if he wants a media career or a career in coaching/management after his playing days are over ? Good luck to him. I think he'd be pretty good at either.
Yes he's lost a lot of mobility and maybe we shouldn't be looking to him to be a constant pick next year but let's give the guy a break. He has been a legend and is still a great ambassador for the club.

If I was his agent I would be trying for Strictly... or IACGMOOH - preferably the latter to see what a good communicator he is (and rounded bloke) and then aim for the punditry.

I'm a great believer in the rule of "great player" <> "great manager" I *think* Troy could be a very good coach.

Speak for yourself mate. Ive never attacked an injured weaker man while he was lying on the ground and severely injured him. The previous 4 seasons 'led' by Troy were very erratic and inconsistent with players 'led' by Troy often under performing. If you have a different view I respect that but describing a view that opposes attacking strangers in the street as nonsense is questionable to say the least!
