Deeney terrible in open play but fair f***s for putting away the two penalties. With his knee on ice after the match suggesting an injury, how about that be his last game for the club so he goes out at least on some kind of high?

Similar to the Norwich game, we were dreadful for the first 20 minutes with a real lack of quality, but we grew in to the game. Also, as with the Norwich game, it's difficult to fault the work-rate of the players today. Our general fitness levels also looked much, much better than since the beginning of the restart.

We looked so much more dangerous when we had Sarr, Deeney and Welbeck all playing closer together, gave them all sorts of problems.

Special mentions to Kiko for the fantastic work to win the first penalty, and Foster who made a couple of excellent saves to keep us in it.

That should be good enough! Delighted!

We'll need some real investment this summer, but if we keep up that level of dedication we can still compete at this level.

GET THE **** IN!!! Far far better second half, even without the penalty goals, we played well second half, even Deeney (minus that big chance missed) had a decent half

Deeney knee's finished by the sounds of it in his post-match interview.

Sounds like Troys knee has been playing up, and he's been playing through it. Think he'll be a doubt for Friday

Fair play to Deeney in his interview - said he wanted better and wanted to score more.

Knee looks ****ed - surely need to rest him on Friday?

In fairness, he did prove a bit of a handful in the second half, won some important duels and got involved in play more. Classic Deeney penalties, glad we had him on the pitch because I'm not sure anyone else would have netted them! Wouldn't want Troy to be a regular next season at all, but I'd be happy enough for him to be in the squad as backup for Cucho/Welbeck/whoever

If it weren’t for 2 penalties I’d have been right.

A little composure and care was all that was lacking today. Yes we got done with a simple corner routine. But credit where it's due. Not the greatest Dawson fan but he just threw his body on the line for everything. Delighted with the win but why do we always do it the hard way.

Wasn't Sarr's best game by any stretch that, but yet again he proves how vital he is, linked up well with Kiko as usual to win the first penalty, and won the second himself. Dumb defending, but he just worries defenders. Sarr>>>>>>>ASM

Huge shout out to Newcastle for taking points off all our rivals then giving us 3 points on a silver platter.

Far better performance and looked more like our usual selves in parts of the first half and second half for sure.

Big credit as its been said to Deeney for both penalties, stepping up and scoring them, could have been a totally different story, no spot kick is a given.

My friend said to me, 'villa fans will have the last laugh', well they have to set up the punchline real fast now, pressure is on!

Dawson has really turned things around recently.

In all honesty I’d probably want him as our 3rd choice alongside Kabasele and with 2 new CB’s

Phew, at last we turn up even if it was only for the second half. Great result, pressure on Muff and Villa to get something now.

I know we're not there yet but if we stay up at the expense of Bournemouth via two penalties, I won't stop laughing all summer. The fact it would be in VAR's first season too would be the icing on the cake.

I can clearly hear the rendition of "Deeney, what's the score?" rattling around Villa Park after the full time whistle in January. Knew he'd have the last laugh.

We looked dead and buried after 17 games, with 9 points on the board. To get 25 points since then from 18 games is a quality recovery. If we had not been asleep at the start of the season, we would be easily mid-table

Just shows how brittle humans are in psychological terms. We looked like a bunch of bats in the sunlight for the first half. No courage or direction. In the 2nd half, particularly after the penalty we looked much better. Helped, in my view, by Newcastle players all contacting their agents at half time to book their summer holidays for them. Deeney is and will always be a club legend, but he knows that he is not a 90 minute top class player any longer, but those penalties were so satisfying for him and the club as a whole. He will be rested for the next game and back to annoy the gunners. I am reasonably confident that we are now safe, but with this club you just never know.

Poor first half showing again, Newcastle the better side and deserved to lead at the break. Second half much better all around and probably could of won by more. Deeney was poor apart from two great penalty kicks, but fair play to him for putting them both away. I still wish he would try something else than going down the middle all the time though. Nice OG by Dawson too - thank god it didn't stand lol. Take the points over the performance as whole, but back to back wins first time sine new year period, coupled with Spam slapping Norwich - we have lost no ground. Six points clear going into that game now. We just need Villa and Muff to both lose now, and if so, we could have done it... but we need to get something out of our least three games.

dig in one more time, as scruffy and as ugly as it is, one more result next week.

Any wins good, no matter how badly you play.

We looked OK in the 2nd half when we stopped humping it forward, passed and pressed.

Hughes and Dawson the stand out players for me

Heart was hurting when Deeney scored the second pen haha. Football. Bloody Hell.

Not there yet but 3 massive points on and even better on the back of the tues result. Even more amazing that we have 6 points when we were losing both

    Great result.

It was like watching two different teams in the first and second half. The first half I thought they were battling but there was no confidence and just nothing went right. Even though we didn't hit the heights in that second half we just seemed more positive, quicker and decisive. It was not about ability it was about mindset and attitude.

And as Deeney's biggest critic, I'm pleased that he showed true captaincy and spirit for the penalties, that took real guts. We expect players to score penalties, but sticking those penalties away in the circumstances was just brilliant - and he had a good second half, hat's off to him today.

Shame, though, that he missed two great chances in open play - and scoring those is what I really want from our main striker.

And I'm astounded to hear that he's been playing with a badly injured knee, bad enough for an operation. Heaven knows why he was even on the pitch in the first place.

It was always on the cards that mid-table Newcastle would fade in the second half.

They looked before half time like a team that has benefited from some coaching, something we may like to try next season. But it’s also about desire and they only had 45 minutes worth.

Only slight worry today is that Palace may be the same this weekend against Villa.

The Geordies are going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about the first penalty - which I thought was an even clearer one than the second.

Dawson had a blinder of a game (again).

All of our defenders are much of a muchness, although Dawson has surged ahead of Cathcart in the pecking order now, for his ability in both boxes. I say get rid of Cathcart, bring in a Dawson style defender and a Kabasele style one too and let them battle it out

What a relief! That’s the best we’ve played by a mile since restart in that second half , proper intensity and playing in the right areas . Sarr was quality ( having been unable to pass on the first half ) . I actually thought we defended ok in open play in the 1st half bit didn’t look like creating much .

As bad as Deeney has been there’s no one I’d rather have stepped up for those 2 penalties . That took Some cojones .

We really should be ok now . Not guaranteed but some breathing space now !

If you’d told me after losing to Southampton away we’d win another 7 games and still have 4 to play id have told you to completely **** off.

Well in on that second half performance, especially Hughes.
