I'm undecided if I would, I am currently further to the side of no I wouldn't. I certainly wouldn't be one of the ones that would take it ASAP & automatically.

If it was made mandatory I would at that point do my utmost avoid it.

The figures are even less useful than I thought. My local hospital says the 4 fatalities it contributed to today’s announced figure in England actually died on 23, 26, 28 and 30 March.

I saw it mentioned that there is an up to 3 week delay on people dying and being added to the figures which I can understand for some cases which may require an autopsy but I don't understand why it would be the case for so many deaths but it would not surprise me at all.

A funeral director commented today to a friend of mine that the situation they’re dealing with is unlike anything they’ve seen before.

Yeah, they take a lot of professional pride in the service they provide to those in their custody and their loved ones. I imagine they’re pretty constrained on what they can do for either at the moment.

It wasn’t only that, but also the numbers involved that he was referring to.

The ONS are, let’s face it, pretty good at doing stats and I’m sure they are aware of the data flaws. It’s rubbish in, rubbish out always.

Part of the problem is that we have assumed it to mean people who died in the last 24 hours. It never was and when you think about it, most unlikely that could be provided.

So the figure represents daily shifts in the accumulated total. That rate of accumulation is a real thing in itself, because those delays in reporting are likely to be similar from day to day. So a big jump is still a big jump and upward rate still upward.

And it may explain why the figures released on Sunday and Monday, which were for the previous 24 hours were lower, it was the weekend and some trusts may not have reported figures back until Monday or Tuesday giving a higher total yesterday and today.

The numbers that are of interest are those coming out of Spain, they have the steepest trajectory of all countries, and they've reported deaths of over 800 for 5 consecutive days now. We still seem to be in line with France.

Well Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city, has now banned the trade in live animals, exactly the sort of trade that was happening in Wuhan, so maybe you need to rethink your political agenda / conspiracy theory, Clive.

    From Al Jazheera..
The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen has issued the most sweeping ban yet on the breeding and consumption of wild animals. The coronavirus has been traced to a market in Wuhan that sold wild animals such as pangolins and civet cats, as well as more conventional fare such as chicken and fish. The Shenzhen regulations permanently ban the trade in and consumption of wild animals, a step beyond the temporary ban issued by the central government at the start of the current outbreak. Along with snakes, lizards and other wild animals, it also bans the consumption of dog and cat meat.

  10. A great step forward

I think we should all give ourselves a big round of applause, I only raised the topic of banning trade with China until they took action a day or so ago and look at the results we have achieved already :)

Hope you're through it but we felt much better after about 4 days, fever seemed to go, but then came back a day or two later and hasn't gone since. That seems quite common. No real change yesterday though Mrs TuT was on the phone to 111 as she got badly dehydrated. It should be easy to avoid dehydration but when constantly feel nauseous it can de difficult to force yourself to drink. We had some rehydration tablets and sachets from our overseas holidays and they seemed to do the trick.
We are still just treading water really. Feeling carp, not getting any better, not getting any worse. Mrs T spoke to the fellow director who gave it her yesterday. He went back to work after 10 days but said it was too soon and had to take further time off. He reckoned it took 2 weeks to feel better.

At one of the govt briefings the speaker said the mortality rate should be viewed in blocks of days rather than individual days alone to better see the trend.
But a big jump in one day is a headline that sells and that's what the media are after ..

It was Bats to Civets (a sort of weasel type wild animal, who needs to eat those?) that caused Sarrs, now it’s suspected to be bats to Pangolins. A similar thing happened after Sarrs and loads of markets were shut down, but they have short memories when it comes to this sort of thing and they soon spring back up again. It’s worth remembering that before this outbreak it was already illegal in China to both hunt and eat Pangolins, but that didn’t stop them selling them in markets and eating them.

Thanks, I'm half expecting it to come back, but so far so good. And Mrs ZZ and little 'un seem untouched so far. So lucky.

I was a little worried for you yesterday as you went all quiet, and had visions of you two being in some hospital ward somewhere, but glad it wasn't that bad. :)

    Best wishes!

The current amount of deaths in the U.K. is at or slightly lower than last year and the average of the last five years. I assume they’re London based as that’s where the majority of Corona virus cases are skewed to, and I’d imagine the only areas anybody would currently notice a significant difference.

Cheers ZZ. I made the mistake of trying to do without paracetamol yesterday and was barely able to sit upright by the time I gave in at 2pm and then spent most of the afternoon asleep. A visit to hospital is still a possibility but based on yesterday's call they aren't really interested in taking you unless you're struggling to breath.

My conspiracy theory is that this whole crisis has been contrived by the big supermarkets.

No more 2 for 1 specials or special offers, prices ticked up, specialist competitors like nurseries and garden centres, clothes retailers closed down but their own garden and clothes sections doing a roaring trade, more fee paying home deliveries ..

Wait for their results to be published, the senior management will be rubbing their hands with the fat bonuses they award themselves...

The GF's brother had a similar thing. Are you coughing still? He had to call an ambulance out as he simply couldn't stop about 4 or 5 days in. This was just after Cheltenham, which he went to not at 100% and he's still not over it.

It really is a nasty bloody illness.

    On the BBC live feed:

China has approved the use of bear bile to treat critically ill coronavirus patients.
The National Health Commission has recommended the use of Tan Re Qing - an injection that contains bear bile, goat horn and herbs - to treat patients with Covid-19.
But there is no evidence the mixture has any medicinal value.
Bear bile, which is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years and fetches a high price in the illegal international market.
The move to approve its use has angered animal rights activists and comes just weeks after the country banned the sale of wild animals for food.

Can you believe this? What are China thinking? How can they approve something as a treatment that has no medicinal value, even more so if it endangers another species?

Yes still coughing but just an occasional irritating cough rather than constant. My only real worry is lungs failing as that can be pretty quick. Otherwise it just seems a case of sitting it out. Not sure it was that smart for your GFs brother going to Cheltenham when not 100% ?

It wasn’t smart for Cheltenham to be on, full stop. It was quite apparent from Italy and France what was coming.

Did I not mention keeping your fluids up *enough*?

A cup of tea is an adequate isotonic rehydrating solution as is diluting 'pop' (lemonade, coke, ginger ale) or even fruit juice 50:50 with water.

Home-made 'proper' rehydrating solution is in 1l of clean water 6 teaspoons of sugar with 1/2 teaspoon of salt (it should be as salty as tears) - you can't drink too much of this stuff.

I know and so does she.
But when just the thought of a sip of water makes you feel sick, it's still tough to get it down and keep it down. The thought of tea, lemonade or fruit juice is equally vomit inducing. I'm managing to force plenty of water down and eat a little. She's being less successful despite my insistence.

No they’re not based in London and the number of deaths they’re dealing with right now is definitely not at or slightly lower than their average.

  29. Thats why we need to hit them in their pockets. Stop buying anything made there or by a Chinese company until they show they can act in a civilised way.

I agree, although Mr HH went with a group of friends and all came back unscathed. I know that categorically because one of them is an anaesthetist who lives in Oz and was over for a conference (which was subsequently cancelled). Because of his job, instead of going into quarantine on his return he was tested and was clear.

That's just your white, bourgeois bigotry speaking. Nothing wrong with bear bile, it's part of their traditional culture. If we have to wipe out bears to produce this unscientific remedy, then it's worth it to assuage my white guilt at questioning other cultures.

I was extremely surprised at the time. I guess it's because the horse racing and gambling industries are effectively self policing and felt that this was too big of a cash cow to postpone, simply for public health reasons.
