Pub Guide: Home And Away Games

  1. I'm meeting my W Ham supporting chum at London Bridge - apparently anything non-ripoff near the Taxpayers' Stadium is home fans only. Plus for us Harrow/Stanmore based 'orns the Jubilee line is the easiest way of getting both there and to the ground.

Are you interested in beer, food or both? The simplest option to tick both boxes is the Moon Under Water on the high street, town centre. It's a Wetherspoon's, so half decent food for a decent price - and plenty of different drinks to choose from.

If you download their app, you can go in, sit down and order your food and drink on there and they'll bring it to your table - much, much quicker than queuing at the bar. Last time I did it, I had my drink within 2 minutes, and my food just after 5 minutes, despite the place being busy:).

They also have lots of screens dotted around the place so you can watch whatever game is being played early that day.

It's not the best pub in the world, but suitable for match days if you fancy a cheap pint and some grub.

Wetherspoon's half decent food??? What what what?
It is rank and disgusting. This particular Wetherspoons also smells very very strongly of piss.

    Translation - it's a ********, like all Wetherspoons pubs.

What's more, it'll be full of the sort of barely-human merde, both Watford and Palace, that bought half-and-half scarves at the Semi-Final.

So your freshly cooked food arrived in 5 minutes.

    Hmm.

I have friends at work who absolutely insist on going to the local Wetherspoons. Despite me giving them long hard stares that Paddington would be proud of.

Sure the food is cheap and so is the beer but

Over the years having eaten there Ive received a still frozen steak and ale pie, sent back twice.
A starter of frozen prawns mmmmmm!
    Many forgotten side dishes.
The worst mixed grill I have ever witnessed
And quite possibly the worst Sirloin steak in the world - toughness of a shoe

The App that brings things to your table often gets things wrong it seems.

Queuing at the bar literally gives be a headache. It is very slow. There are few staff who are disinterested and incredibly slow.
No one seems to be able to decide whether they are queuing in a line or at the bar as is usual

The manageress is not unlike a dragon and very unhelpful

    I avoid now. sod socialising

Do they serve egg and chips? It's the only real consideration.

On the plus side the Wetherspoons near the ground at palace doesn't usually have a smelly tramp in it like the one in Watford. So it's got that going for it.

In a rare moment of charity, I was trying to think of a pub in Watford that isn't a complete ********, to recommend.

Now I don't go to home games very often and I don't like Watford as a town either, but for what it's worth, the two Estcourts (Arms and Tavern) are tolerable and both serve food and beer, some of it with sticks in and the Welly opposite the Estcourt Arms is generally okay and has the added bonus that Maninblack won't be sitting in there on his own, looking for something to disapprove of, unlike the Arms (I assume he still goes in there, I know he used to).

Why don't you just go to the Red Lion and be done with it?

    Clearly not a popular choice:D!

He's looking for a pub before the footie, not a 5 Star restaurant!!

I made the assumption that after 10 years away, the football was his priority and a pub was very much second on the list of importance for the day. Therefore - somewhere cheap and cheerful seemed to be required!!

I can only base it on my experiences when going there - food hasn't been rank and disgusting considering the price I paid and the fact I wasn't expecting haute cuisine; did not smell of piss; the crowd in there were no different to any other random collection of Watford fans found on a matchday; the app has never got any of my orders wrong; and I didn't care if the food wasn't fresh being as it was cheap and was merely just a time killing activity before the game started. I wouldn't choose to go there just to eat, but before the football - not a problem.

They do - and it tasted like.................egg and chips:p

Thank you for the tips guys very much appreciated.

So look like The Oddfellows or The Moon Under Water.

going to be at one of theses palaces around 13:00 will the oddfellows be showing the early kick off? As i maybe meeting some sad away fans before the game and not sure if they will allow them in the moon? :)

  13. Get out at Bushey and walk through Oxhey Park. (20min) Railway tavern opp. Bushey Station is ok and will be showing early game on 3 screens.

There's always a good mix of home and away fans in The Moon Under Water, so not a problem.

Don't want to sound like a cheerleader for that place - it's bang average, but IMO is perfect for pre match as it's cheap and cheerful and you can easily watch the earlier game.

Although with the current lovely weather, maybe you'd be better finding one with a big garden? The Moon does have an outdoor patio-type-garden, but it's smallish. Afraid I don't know the other pubs well enough to suggest any good options.

I know it's a long way off but if your coming to the North when Watford play Burnley in March 2020. The Robin Hood in Helmshore (approx 20mins from Burnley's ground) is a great place to stop for food and drink enroute. Please let us know before hand if your coming 01706 404200, and we will happily put food and drink offers on for you. Well known locally for great cask beer. Coaches welcome.

Surely most visiting coaches are too busy preparing for the game? Seems like a strange business model.
