Does anyone on here happen to have any experience in this?

Working on developing an android app for my dissertation and not receiving any help from my tutor.

You need to be kicking some backsides. How much is this tuition costing you?

Either go up the food-chain or your department's head/board of study. Or contact your SU/GoS. This is ******* disgusting.

    Hang on, people.

Tutors aren’t there to write dissertations for students - if they were, then effectively the tutor would be the one getting the grade for the work, not the student. I would want to know a bit more about what was and what was not the expectation of what NIH should be doing off his own bat before I rushed to condemn the tutor or institution.

Yea, my tutor is really on there to offer support and guidance in terms of the overall project, not the actual development of the app (he is awful at that too though).

I was just wondering if anyone on here had an experience in that industry that I could bounce some development ideas off

Sorry a bit "shootin' from the hip". In my defence I'm not particularly happy with my "place of work" as I've just discovered they're charging "self-funded" PhD students (in "humanities") the other side of £13K a year for little more than access to the library, an email address and a fortnightly half hourly "chat" with a pompous wind-bag.

    Fortnightly? Blimey, that’s generous.

    Monthly where I have worked.

In fairness, my course has been fairly good, some excellent lecturers. My tutor is just pretty awful.

I might be able to help. Don't know much about android, but I've written a fair amount of code.

Best thing to do is join some forums or communities and ask there. I guarantee you'll find someone willing to help with whatever you're struggling with if you go anywhere reputable. Developer communities tend to be extremely collaborative. I know a bunch of developers, but none of them do Android stuff or I'd hook you up.

Unfortunately it is fairly specific to android.

Just trying to return one item from a DB to display a user's name to screen based on their username which they have used to log in on the previous activity but its proving much more complicated than I anticipated.

Plenty of advice out there on how to return arrays of database data as a list, etc but all I want is to display one name based on the user (its different to their username). Was much easier in web development!

Try reddit if you haven't already. I'd be very cautious of stackoverflow, people there can be absolute ****s.

I have done a lot of development (not android sorry - web /php/iOS and a lot of database experiences), but in case I can help which development platform are you using , is a generic (phonegap type thing) or android specific (I guess android equivalent of Xcode) ?

Just realised how old this post is

No worries, it was for a dissertation that was handed in last week!

Glad to say I managed to develop it to a fairly high standard but it took a lot of work!
