Not going to go into too much detail, post is above for context. "Jokes" about rape, sexism, racism, slavery and the rest.

One of the obnoxious fellas involved is from Rickmansworth, went to Boys Grammar, is a Watford fan and even worked at Watford FC before.

I cannot believe people with these views still breathe the same air as me, let alone live in my vicinity and the thought that I may have even sat near this guy at The Vic at some point in my life is ******* me off.

I'm sure somebody on here knows him, heck he might even post here and I don't even know what my end point is but I just wanted to shed light on this class a canut.

    Thanks.

We have a few knowledgable about law on here, hate to see you do something that gets you or the forum in doo doo, regardless of the moral rights and wrongs, by posting personal information without permission

Probably plastered all over social media by now, but yeah, probably best not to have his name/picture there.

Trial by social media is probably bordering on legality and isn't going to help--it should be up to the university and police to deal with it.

I'm always uncomfortable with trial by media (social or otherwise) but, if anyone deserves it, this scumbag does.

From my dealings with Exeter University (the place, its students and graduates) I'm not surprised. I'm certain the place's entrance examination comprised two questions:
    1. Just how big a mistake did Oxbridge make in not accepting you?
    2. Just how right was Enoch?

Posting a link to something that is publicly available is fine imho as long as that page is not illegal. That is where it gets a bit grey. Some of what is written is incitement. Some of the stuff posted is sickening, but this chap is a trainee lawyer and he's posting publicly, stuff intended for private conversation? Also bear in mind that it's excerpts taken out of context which could have been edited. Take one smiley off of the end of a sentence and sarcasm becomes something all together more serious. It all makes me nervous but I'll leave it for now.

I get his motivation but in my opinion this isn't the right way to do it. Gather the evidence and turn it over to the relevant authorities. You only resort to this sort of campaign if the authorities turn a blind eye.
At best he's possibly also committed a crime at worst he's made himself a target. There are too many stories of on-line bullying which turns into tragic events and manifests itself in real life. Trying to combat this, through the same platform in this way is asking for trouble.

We need to remember that not everyone is as fair well balanced and intelligent as the good members on here. We're also not in a position to judge. We have professionals for that sort of thing. One thing is for sure, it hasn't helped my mistrust of lawyers.

Actually reading further he says Nottingham Trent are investigating so he's a prize plum for posting this whilst there is an ongoing case.

He's not a trainee lawyer yet, he's just a student. I doubt whether a law firm would touch him with a bargepole now and if he has committed any offence he won't be able to qualify at all (he would probably have a hard time persuading the regulatory authorities even if it is a matter for university internal discipline).

There are some arseholes out there but the vast majority of law students aren't like this.

From his photo looks like the dictionary definition of entitled and smug, studying law at Exeter - Id say his existence is its own punishment

Im sure there are some good law students, there must be surely? The point is he is studying at Exeter. It's a 3 year holding pen for the offspring of rich white people whose children have turned out too stupid for Oxbridge, no matter how much money mummy and daddy have thrown at their education

Nope you're good. Re broadcasting publicly available information (unless under injunction or regarding a court case) is fine. He is potentially in hot water for breaching privacy. Whether it's in the public's best interest for him to have done so is debatable given the investigation.

There is an excellent book by the first class journalist and broadcaster, Jon Ronson, called 'So You've been publicly shamed' that this chap - and some of you conducting your own trial by social media - would do well to read.

And that is a concern. As is the the day in day out slop of hatred certain newspapers dish out each day. We need a more civil public discourse all round.

Can I just correct this as I work with/for far, far, far too many people from Oxbridge:

We had an exceptionally nasty piece of work as a PhD student. She was lazy, thick* and spent 95% of her time "networking with the senior management" (aka "Telling our bosses everything we did, or didn't, do"). By some "stroke of luck" (bribery/sexual favours) she ended up-in [grits_teeth]a pretty productive/good[/grits_teeth] Oxford research group. I had to physically restrain one of peers writing on her leaving card "Oxford deserves you."

*By an extremely strange quirk of fate she "appeared" in one of my "People You Should Network With..." things on LinkedIn recently. She's ended up doing something in Brazil and proudly stated on her profile page that she was working at "CAPES" blissfully unaware that it's the/a Brazilian academic research funding body.

All of the places/universities/companies I've ever worked in/with had/have a very strictly enforced "hands-off all students" rule. And I only "crack on" with doctors (with a decent publication record).

I think we should let the various authorities deal with this.

Discussion regarding the subject are fine but lets keep the thread from getting personal.

Obviously without condoning their knuckle-dragging opinions, it doesn't sit well with me that you can be shamed, expelled from university and lose your job for a private opinion.

It isn't a crime to be a racist or a misogynist in private, no matter how unsavoury it is. I'm happy that they hopefully will be unable to be lawyers, but I'm not sure it is a positive trend to set.

It's not a private opinion if you post it on social media, is it? No university or employer would want to be associated with such views and so are quite right to get rid of such an individual.

That depends on whether you think a WhatsApp group is a public forum. I would say that is akin to a private conversation, which thinking about it would evoke the same reaction if it was overheard.

So actually, I take back what I said. I think WhatsApp probably is public
