Afternoon lads - this might be a bit off topic but I could really do with some help from Watford fans.

Basically, I am the coach for MAN v FAT Football which as the name would suggest are football leagues for men who want to lose weight. Our leagues are exclusively for guys whose BMI is higher than 27.5. We play a 14-week league (the Borehamwood one is at Maccabi - full details at www.manvfatfootball.org/borehamwood) and have teams of 10 who play a 30 minute game each week. The unique thing about the games are that players weigh in before and they earn goal bonuses for their individual and team weight loss. That's added to the pitch scores and that's how we decide our games.

There's a quick video explainer here:

We're passionate about supporting men who want to lose weight because the guy who started it has struggled with weight all his life. There's naff all help out there for normal blokes who want to lose weight. So he started MAN v FAT in 2014 and now we support more than a million men per year on our site and forum (www.manvfat.com).

The MAN v FAT Football leagues started in January 2016 and we now have more than 4,500 players who between them have lost nearly 50 tons. We're bringing the leagues to Barnet/Borehamwood in October and 95% of players lose weight and I'd absolutely love to get the league full. For some reason, Borehamwood is so far seeming to be much harder to fill though. I'm wondering if any locals could give me their thoughts on where we need to be looking for guys who might join up? Or any suggestions really!

    All the best,

    Mark

If my knees weren't shot from playing 5 aside when on the solid side of acceptable I would have been in. They used to call be the bulldozer because I bundled someone out of a fire escape when tackling them once.:D

Good luck to you it's a worthwhile project.

    You're welcome.

Not quite heavy enough as I'd be very interested in this. Anyone know where I can play 5 a side as a very rusty over 50, (and I really don't want to do that walking football nonsense).

If it's anything like my areas a lot of them have gone women only.

Might have been me joining and just sitting in there and staring, I dunno.*

*The above was posted in jest. There's no way in hell I would ever join a gym.

Sounds interesting but my BMI will be well below 27.5. However as it sounds such a good idea I will go on a beer and burger programme and work towards qualification so will be in touch in 3 months or so. Tough schedule but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.

ps Presumably everyone downs a pint of water before the weigh in and then has copious wee breaks during the game ??

pps seriously good luck with this. My knees are shot from 20 years of 5 aside on hard astroturf and 2 subsequent knee ops so I need to find myself one of those walking footy games that were advertised in a bank commercial 6 months ago.

What, in being fat, lazy and socially excluded?

Not really, why? Is it good?

It's fantastic. Being socially excluded I don't have to put up with morons.

I refuse to participate in walking football, for fear of coming across Quique managing the opposition.

Good luck with this. I wont be getting involved as I'm in sensational shape, a real thoroughbred.

However, simply eating less is very effective at losing weight. It's much easier to control your weight via this method than via exercise. Especially if your exercise is a trifling 30 mins a week. It's also cheaper, as you spend less on food and presumably you are profiting from the fatties with your venture, so people wont need to spend their money on this.

Now you can't say there is naff all help out there for normal blokes who want to lose weight.

They did a demo of walking football at the Vic last season at half time. It was so bad it almost made me wish I was queuing for a beer.

Tell me truthfully, how many of these lard arses finish 30 minutes of pootling about and then down a sugary energy drink and a few doughnuts to replenish their energy?

Part of the training. Pile the calories on so the weight starts as high as possible for the following week. No point in burning off calories between games.

I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty certain that, by and large, the same methods of losing weight that women follow, also work for men.

Unless you count serious illness, no-one should ever lose weight. Gradual steady increase just below the level that introduces diabetes and heart disease is the way to go.

Amputation. That's the way to go. One leg is 30lbs right there.
