Saddens me to see that Gordon Banks, England's greatest keeper, has died. I was privileged to see him at The Vic when we beat Stoke in the FA cup with a terrific goal by Colin Franks. RIP

I remember attending a League Cup game at the old Victoria Ground in Stoke in September 1967 when Tony Currie made his debut as a substitute. With virtually his first action in the game he raced on to a long ball, burst into the penalty area, ran round Gordon Banks and had his shot kicked off the line by a covering defender. Just as when Barnes made his debut in 1981, you could see that this would be a very special player.

However we did lose 2-0, only, of course, to gain our revenge less than two and a half years later.

    RIP Gordon.

This does read more like a tribute to TC.

Hopefully a few more years before his obits start flying around.

Maybe it does read like that - but, let's face it, there is no need for me to write a tribute to Gordon Banks - it's all been said already. England's finest keeper, a Perry Digweed he wasn't......

    Fully agreed.

Young Digweed would have ended up in the back of the net along with the ball if he’d been on the end of Pele’s header.
