Seen this and it makes sense that we are looking to offload him with the arrival of Pantilimon
If true then it's likely we will have profited financially from the goalkeeper switch

Pantilimon is a big upgrade on Arlauskis IMO. Classic Pozzo if we make a profit too

Think his Villa performance, as difficult as the conditions were, ended any chance he had of being considered a serious contender for the goalkeeping position full time. Best for all concerned if he moves on and I can't believe Pantsdown would have signed if he thought it was a three-way fight.

A lot will say he's a bad keeper because of his Villa performance, which was a very tough game to come on in and especially in those conditions. From what I've seen against England and in the friendlies he's clearly a decent keeper.
But when you have the chance to sign a keeper with 50+ Premier League apps and somehow make a profit on the swap then it's a no brainer.
Wish Arla all the best if he goes and I'm sure he'll have a decent career for himself.

You want your backup keeper to be reliable and for your defence to feel at ease when they come on.

Ours looked like they were sh*tting bricks.

Decent move for all concerned, although I do think that there is a good goalie in there somewhere.

He has only conceded one goal in the premiership in his time with Watford. Impressive stats. Is €1m enough?

QSF pretty damning in his press conference. Says he has signed CP to provide quality cover in case something happens to Gomes, who will remain as number one, because he didn't feel we had that before now. Ouch.

It's damning, but it could have also been said with the idea in his head that Arla has already left the club.

FWIW I think he's a good goalie and the examples of Villa and PNE are stupidly used against him. At PNE he stopped it being a humiliation and at Villa there were gale force winds and it was pelting down. He did well in those conditions. Either way, to judge a goalie off 2 games is the height of idiocracy because you can't properly judge a player from two games. I'm certainly not displeased that Pants is coming in to our squad and would have made a good addition with or without Arla's presence.

One interesting fact is that Espanyol were also linked with Pants before we got him. Whether that was paper talk or Sunderland forcing us to make a move on him, I'm not sure

He was not a terrible backup keeper IMO but he was probably the best we could get hold of at the time & we've now got a much better one.

My wife and I were having dinner in the same restaurant as Giedrius a couple of weeks ago and took the chance to have a long chat with him. He and his young family couldn't be more charming and I wish him well wherever he goes. He did look ropey when he came on at Villa though - not that I mentioned that to him.

Pretty brutal quotes from Quique in the Observer, think it's the first time I've ever heard him talk a player without mentioning that they're an amazing person or an amazing player!

“When I came here he (Arlauskis) already belonged to the squad,” Flores said. "After I checked on him I told the club that Arlauskis is not enough. The difference between him and Gomes is too much.We need to see how Arlauskis plays in another team and he will probably go to Spain. I think he will go on loan but I can’t say for sure. It is down to the feelings of the player too. Maybe with games he will improve and we will see another version of Arlauskis.”

Based on this, I can't believe even the thought of Orsi doing the washing up in her underwear could have taken Quique's mind off the palpable fear he must have felt bringing this guy on when holding on against Villa.

I accept the bottom line is if a player isn't good enough then so be it, and it's natural for us to want better..

However, I feel a little sorry for Arlauskis. He was extensively scouted by our recruitment team, who saw something in him and brought him over. After one full appearance in a cup tie in which our whole side failed to impress, and an appearance off the bench at Villa which couldn't have been easy circumstances, (plus whatever QSF has seen of him in training), he's told he's not good enough (despite having his better years ahead of him, age wise). Having re-located to a new country, he's off again. It's a big reversal of circumstances.

I'm saying this more from the human side rather than the football side.

Better for QSF to be blunt and and admit it isn't working than to beat around the bush and let Arlauskis rot in the reserves while sparing his feelings. That won't do GA's career any good.

If Arlauskis doesn't have a future with the club then moving him on quickly has to be the right move for him in the long term.

Totally agree. I was just expressing sympathy from the human side of it, because back in July we rated him and were keen to sign him, and then after about 110 minutes playing time we've decided we don't.

As a football fan, I'm far happier with Pantimilon as a back-up keeper, but as a human being I feel sorry for Arlauskis moving to England to begin a supposedly big bright future, only for it to go wrong.

Doubt it. QSF came out with some mealy mouthed words about him having been signed before he came to the club and not being up to the standard, but still having a chance to prove himself. I suspect the latter caveat was added because he knew it was a loan move rather than permanent in the offing. Hardly a ringing endorsement though.
