    I don't mind it, but it's not their best. I would plump (just) for 'Close to Me'.

    As far as their best known "pop" songs go, IMHO;

    Inbetween days > Just like heaven > A forest > Boys don't cry > Close to me > Lovecats > Lullaby > Catch > Lovesong > ...................................................................................................................Why can't I be you .........................................................................Friday I'm in love !!

    Friday finishes in last place simply because this song exists.

    It's a toss up for me between Close to Me and Inbetween Days.

    I excluded A Forest on the grounds you had referred to 'commercial pop songs'.

    Fair enough, though it was a minor chart hit. Their first. 1980. Bloody hell.

    Indeed. I was in a band then and we very ineffectually attempted to cover it.

    Not so many Thursday songs, but Bowie’s Thursday’s Child is very good, poignant.

    I Don’t Like Mondays is always remembered for summarising the bewilderment of how a schoolgirl could shoot her school up, but the story was far more explicable and worse than the random act of petulance the song describes.

    The perpetrator had a undiagnosed brain injury, following a bike accident and an abusive father, who plied her with substances, slept in her bed and thought a gun would be a reasonable birthday present. She did a terrible thing, but she was let down by everyone and still in jail now, her life (and those of others) ruined by permissive gun laws.

    Blue Monday…one of the greatest 12” (need to explain what that is to the under 30s)

    agree A Forest was Cures best ever song. Saw them at Wembley last year - was an excellent concert

    everyday is like Sunday also a cracking Smiths song

    Yes there are few bands who are still at the top of their game and playing Wembley and Glastonbury 40 odd years after their first hit.
    Mind you, you should hear @Keighley s bands version. Really showed Robert what he should have done, allowing the song to reach its full potential. Rare and valuable collectors item these days.

    A bit more obscure but prefer this very early The Cure track, "10.15 Saturday night". Robert Smith looking about 18 !;

    Liked for how the title of the song seems to stop at ‘Mor’…very apt for that incarnation of the band.
    EDIT: well, it stopped there on the original post, but on the ‘replied’ version an ‘n’ has appeared.

    Sunday by Bloc Party sums up the hangover after Saturday night’s excesses.
    ‘Was a heavy night, feels like I’ve come back from the dead’
    and
    ‘I can’t remember what I said, to anyone!’
