Why illogical? If we’re going for an auto promotion place surely these are the sort of games we want to be winning?

4-3-3 would be better. Or even 4-4-2

If we don't have wing backs, and can't keep a clean sheet with 3 CBs anyway, we might as well try and score some goals.

Not happy maybe, but some seem to think it sufficient which is very strange.

Bachmann getting a bit of stick elsewhere for the goal but looked like all 3 of our players were just stood there watching a 37 year old nip in ahead of them to score .

  7. This feels like when we hired Munoz last championship season. Trying to keep clean sheets as a priority under Ivic, then sack him and play more cavalier in attack under Munoz.

It definitely feels like with this team we are setting ourselves up too defensively when we could probably score goals for fun up front if the scackles we're off.

Everyone is saying it, but it really does make so much sense to go four at the back, given the squad RE had been left with.

I actually think the team starts to look pretty good as a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 (on paper :) ).

The question is whether RE has been training with one of these formations up until now, or if he's been concentrating totally on the current formation.

Gino has let him down, for sure, but our points total so far is fine and there is a long way to go. A successful season is possible, but we've got to play a system that suits the squad we've ended up with.

Rotherham away. A point is ok.
F**k me we as fans need to remember where we were less than a decade ago.
    Enjoy it.

On mature reflection, I now realise that it was definitely not illogical to be disappointed with that result. I hope there are no Rotherham fans sneaking a look at this thread, but we need to be completely dominating teams like that to have any chance of auto promotion.

Part of a manager’s job is to get the team in the right frame of mind. We have started the last few games (the goalie and defence, in particular) like we were stoned. They get paid to play football (and manage) to the best of their abilities. A manager should demand, as a minimum, that full focus and energy is in place from the get go.

From tomorrow’s session onwards, there needs to be a collective drive and an instilling of passion and steel. Perhaps the players that were in the dressing room last season have not yet shaken off the negativity, but it is well past time to grow up and fight for the team. Do we have the characters to set the example? I’m not sure. Maybe they are all too nice.

I want to be fair to Rotherham, they battled and got the best out of themselves. If you asked RE to swap squads with Rotherham, he would tell you where to go. We have infinitely better players (save for some defenders), yet we are not putting them away.

The distraction of the window is over now. Time to start getting proper results and performances. Over to you Rob.

I didn't see the match live and have only just seen the rotherham goal. Dear oh dear oh dear. That has to be a new low for defensive incompetence.
The ball was just lobbed in there. Any one of the two centres and the keeper should have sorted it out as a piece of routine. But the fact they still act as if they've only just been introduced is dreadful.

I'm sure we might see it from time to time, but considering we have one realistic LB option (who might not be fit for next week), I highly doubt it'll be the go-to formation. I think as well, we're still going to want the full-backs to go forward, so it won't suit Gaspar and won't suit Ngakia perfectly, and although Hause would probably do a better job in a 2 than anyone at the club, 2 deeper midfielders and JP as a #10 didn't give the defence a lot of protection against QPR, so we'd probably need to modify that. Basically, we've left ourselves with a squad not quite suitable for anything really

Then we have a weak player on the right. As with Gaspar, he his definitely not a WB.
So is it really a positive to have him in the side?

I am happy with Cathcart out of all our central defenders who have had games. He had a decent game overall particular second half where he was spraying decent balls around the pitch to our players. For their goal, Cathcart and Bachmann were expecting Kabasele to do the simple task of jumping to head the ball. Once he didn't he made them look bad because the player was then free to score. Kabasele really shouldn't start games.

Jump and head the ball? Bit unfair to expect him to do 2 things at once. Surprised he didn’t just stop for a lie down.

Both have kits on that look as tight as a wetsuit.
Scott/Gino, sign him up. Not on our usual 5yr contract, he might not last that long.

Ok, we had three players close to the ball. It was Bachmann responsibility as he is looking down the pitch. It's his area, he should command it.
To be fair, Bachmann has begun the season well, but l did say in a past post that his form will not last.
His career failure at not coming off his line cost us today.
It was poor play. We just start as if we are asleep.

Watched about ten minutes of the match. We were so defensive and passive. If we matched Rotherham for intensity, bravery and tactics, we’d have thrashed them.

Edwards looking more like Sannino than Jokanovic unfortunately.

Bayo was trumpeted as the poster boy of the failings of Pozzo this summer before he even kicked ball.

Turns out he is a good footballer. Now if he can figure out how to head he will be a monster.

Predictable result once Sarr was injured (I predicted it), but could have been a lot worse.

    Sh*t defending all round!

Cathcart and Kabasele doing their usual ball watching routine and Bachmann doing his usual glued to the line routine!

One of the softest goals we will concede this year!

It was really the fact that having never spent a penny in the championship, we then spent £5m on a Bayat player who had only just been sold for £1m.

It really isn’t strange or unusual to be questioning that even though it’s not the players fault.

Genuinely delighted for Bayo, and I am a lot happier with our forward options now than 5 days ago, I think Bayo, Sarr, Davis and JP should all be aiming for 10 goals, maybe more, but it doesn't change the fact that £5m in this day and age for a Championship player should be for players who are absolutely going to tear the league to shreds, and that the money could have been better apportioned

It was absolutely shocking all round. The defenders should’ve easily cleared it, but Bachman should’ve definitely come for it as well. Surely it’s better for the keeper to claim a ball where possible, so that you can retain possession and build out from the back, rather than an aimless header that has a 50% chance of going to the opposition again. It’s not feasible to come for every ball of course, but keepers do routinely come and catch crosses and as a keeper if you’re not going to come for that ball, which ball exactly are you going to come for?

I think this is a huge part of our defensive issues.

Bachman is a fantastic shot stopper but he doesn't command his box. It makes our already nervous and inconsistent defenders even more vulnerable to mistakes as they try and deal with the balls in to the box that should be his.

And opposition teams are well aware of this and will exploit it.

    You watched 10 mins??
Must of been the first 10 because it wasn't the game I was at.
Rotherham didnt get out of their own half for the majority of the 2nd half and their supporters were whistling for the final whistle and celebrated as if they'd won a big cup tie. Try watching the game rather than a snippet of it before making a pointless comment on the whole of the game.

It literally was a ball basically lobbed into the box for no one in particularly wasn’t it.

But we let a 37 year old defender get in ahead of us ..

Total lack of communication and awareness from 3 quite experienced players.

Should always go for the ball and certainly not let it bounce .
