    When was the last time the sixth place team went up though - doesn't happen often does it?

    Not for the first time I wish they'd stuck at least a bit longer with the old system where the play-offs were contested between three teams in the second tier and one in the top flight with the latter getting relegated unless they won the play-offs, even if it meant some seasons that only two teams would get promoted.

    Well we would have not had special days in 99 or 2006 though potentially.

    Think Palace came 6th in 2004 and went up but probably happened since .

    Just two, while the First Division was reduced from 22 down to 20 clubs. We were in the first edition of the play-offs as they are now. (1989)

    I think we went out on away goals 0-0 away 1-1 at home. I think it was the last season the away goals rules were used for the playoffs.
