Both had real by the 'skin of their teeth' victories in earlier contests, so hopefully fate (along with their outstanding ability, but you need a spot of luck in any sport) has determined that they will prevail.

Good sprint finish in his locker. His Italian coach allayed all fears when he raised his arms before the final burst.

Third fastest GB time ever in the women's relay. Good effort. They couldn't really do anything better than that.

The usual US procession. Good run from the Dutch for silver.

Here is the alternative 'medals' table, I'd never heard of the 'athletics integrity unit':

    upload_2021-8-7_14-12-28.png

    https://www.economist.com/graphic-d...ke-the-podium-in-the-athletics-doping-contest

I'm not surprised India's up there after what happened after the Delhi Commonwealth Games and the number of Indian athletes who failed doping tests. India is the king of pharmaceutical manufacturing so all the illegal chemicals will be easily available. Italy being up there is a surprise, they are not the usual suspects. The battle against the cheaters will always be ongoing.

Maybe why we don’t win much ?!

  13. I just hope that Mo Farah wasn't 'well dodgy'. Bit too late to find out now though. Personally I doubt if any athlete in a coaching cheat's stable isn't/wasn't tainted at all.

Anyway, why the Ruskis are allowed to compete at all, even under a flag of convenience and a bit of Tchaikovsky, beats me. Most of the rest of the world would love to see them 'f.cked right off' and I doubt if losing the Ruski TV revenues would make a whole lot of difference. Same for the Chinks too really who are right up there on that table and, one way or another, are entirely responsible for the mayhem of the last 18 months. Really p.ss off both Putin and that Ping-Pong bloke in one go.

Then we can demand that the Yanks step down too (who don't look too kosher in the cheating stakes either) and engage with the host nation in a one off repechage for a silver medal, re-enacting Pearl Harbour via shooting, swimming, diving, taekwondo, kabuki and puppet theatre.

Job done. The mighty Brits top the medal table. Get in there!

Not sure that synchronised swimming should really be an Olympic sport, but it is quite a spectacle in the standard of synchronisation they achieve and the innovation.

I remember when it was first introduced to the Olympics, it was more like a Busby Berkely routine.

I was expecting to detest Sam Quek presenting the breakfast but she's been great. Knows when to let Dan Walker talk his usual ******** and actually seems to have researched the sports involved. Big green tick when she referred to Yafai putting his opponent 'on the floor' in the boxing.

I'd imagine a stint on The One Show might be in her future.

I have to disagree . Michael Johnson is king pundit almost the Richie Benaud of athletics .
Balding , in my opinion , gives the impression that she is as important as the athletes.

Try telling that to the Iron Age inhabitants of Old Sarum.

Cuba wins gold in 4 of the 8 Olympic boxing weight divisions. Some performance, even the sternest of the island's critics would have to agree.

When she retired after Rio and did a few hockey co-commentator gigs it became clear she was very much a natural talent but in the mad, mad world of the media what does that mean?

Agree, but I would like to congratulate ALL the medal winners, not just the British ones. There were some brilliant displays in all sorts of sports, despite the lack of spectators.

I'm always a bit sad when the Olympics ends, because I enjoy it so much and you get into the habit of watching it.

Same. A big well done for the organisation, particularly having been put back a year. Also they went into the event not knowing whether an infection wave would rage through the Olympic village, which ultimately would have been disastrous.
