Post-hockey chill-out was "Justice Society: World War II". I'm a bit of a comics / animation nut (though I never got into Marvel and only the post-DKR Batman) but I do enjoy these DC things*. Before putting this on I thought it would be 5 mins before switching it off exclaiming "What a load of crap!" but surprisingly I really liked it and found the story and characterisations were really engaging.

*Good ones have been DKR, The Killing Joke (even with the 'ropey' Batgirl bit at the beginning but Mark Hamell was a superb Joker), Gotham by Gaslight, Batman Ninja (some of the animation was sublime), Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (wonderfully dumb) and (one for @Clive_ofthe_Kremlin) Superman: Red Son.

Watched Wild Rose on Netflix, really good film (although takes a while to be able to understand the Scottish accents...)

Might be of interest to you: R4's 09h45 'book of the week' (for the next fortnight) is Peter Godrey Smith's "Other Minds: The Octopus and The Evolution of Intelligent Life":

Watched Tenet last night, didn’t have a clue what was going on for most of it but then seemed to make sense towards the end.

Army of the Dead - not sure I’ve ever seen a film with so many ridiculous plot holes. 2.5 hours long as well, could’ve been half that.

A lovely piece of chewing gum for the brain. I did enjoy the reimagined zombie castes.

This is probably not everyone's cup of tea (particularly some other shorts* that are being released on the same disc) but Ronnie Barker's masterpiece 'Futtocks End' is finally getting a DVD and BR release.

Over the week-end I watched yet again "GONE WITH THE WIND"

I didn't watch it all because I missed the start and it is FOUR AND THREE QUARTER HOURS LONG, but it has to be said it is one of the greatest films ever made and that was way back in 1939, and it is still a great watch to this day.

The daughter came down this weekend, wanted to watch Rebecca, as her fella would not tolerate it.

thoroughly recommend it if you have 120 minutes of online paperwork to catch up on.

The trailer for that was pretty good so I looked it up on IMDB before watching. The reviews were pretty crap so just decided to read the detailed plot synopsis as opposed to watching it and I'm glad I did based on how it played out.

Spiral. OMG what an absolute waste of an hour and a half. Chris Rock I can't take seriously as an actor and after his performance was completely pathetic.

I actually thought this was alright. You knew what you were getting although I called the 'twist' almost immediately.

Rock was just playing 'shouty man' which was fine with me. It's when he actually attempts 'deeper' acting it all falls apart.

Put a decent lead in and you'd have a completely different movie. I just believe it was a wasted opportunity. I did call it too but it took a little longer than immediately.

I just watched Notting Hill on TV for the first time, and I found it a quite pleasant uncomplicated film.

Sicario. A great fan of Villeneuves work. From the opening scene which resembles some grisly house of horror to the denouement and the sicario in question gaining revenge it's a pretty well travelled road with plenty of familiar tropes and super performances from the idealist Emily Blunt, the pragmatic Josh Brolin and the enigma and ice cold killer Benicio del Toro who really steals the show. What sets the film apart set as it is in the horrors of modern day Mexico and the cartel wars which are dissected in the superb documentary Cartel Land is the shooting, editing, the score and the pacing. Solidly constructed like a master at work building tension, creating characters and a complete internal logic. This scene is a perfect encapsulation.

Saw Sicario 2 last week which is a decent sequel, probably not quite as good as the first one but Brolin and Del Toro both put in good shifts again

He puts in a very good turn in 'FARGO'. Be interesting to see in what or where he would give his performance of a lifetime. I've always found that comics gave very, very good straight performances - especially when cast as a 'baddie' - ISTR Jimmy Tarbuck (yes, really) giving a stellar performance (more of a cameo) as a Scouse gangster is something or other.... And most of the cast of the superlative Homicide: Life on the Street were standups...

Been watching all of Peaky Blinders over the last couple of months and finally caught up to the last episode of series 5 last night. Whilst I've enjoyed the vast majority of it I feel it completely disappeared up it's own backside at the end of the current series. Very disappointed.

I loved the first 4 series but didn't even get around to finishing the 5th. Felt very weak in comparison.

We watched, what I thought would be, a nice piece fluff/chewing gum for the brain: Monster Hunter. I wasn't actually expecting a Dogme 95 inspired meditation of what being a 'monster' or a 'hunter' is but... kerrrrist that was shyte.

Recently purchased Shudder on Prime and been working through the film's and documentaries on there. Personal highlight for me was the Lair of the Silver Wyrm featuring a young Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi.

The Tomorrow War. Not a bad bit of fluff with some very good cgi monsters and well-thought-out touches to the ludicrous plot:
drafting only soldiers who would have died before the future war started
. The third act is supposed to be too comical (according to critics) - I wouldn't know as I fell asleep. Dunno why (possibly because of her strongish performances in the Handmaid's Tale?) but I expected slightly 'more' from Yvonne Strahovski.

Had to remind myself several times throughout the film that Tomorrow War wasn't a comedy.

When they needed a 'Volcano' expert why did they ask a 12 year old kid?

Watched 'Yesterday'. A bit on the irksome side. Too much Richard Curtis influence and not enough Danny Boyle influence. Gaping plot holes and too many daft coincidences. Too annoying to be even classed as whimsical. <70s Hat on> Nice bird though </70s Hat off>.

I'm very late to the party but I just watched City of God for the first time.

My word what a brilliant film that is.

Watched Black Widow last night with my wife.

I think her review summed it up best: "It's a run-of-the-mill male-oriented action movie, except with female characters instead of men."

It's a glorified Mission Impossible movie, although it has the redeeming quality of not requiring you to watch Tom Cruise. I'd avoid unless you can see it for free. It's easily the worst Marvel movie I've seen (including Captain Marvel) purely because it's so jarringly out of place. Outside of a couple of minor references you wouldn't know it was in the MCU at all. For its flaws, at least Captain Marvel felt like a Marvel movie.

We’ve got a lovely independent cinema here in Melton. Cheap tickets, you get shown to you seat by an usher with a torch, they’ve got sofas and bottles of wine. Ooooh it’s a treat.

Went to see Cruella last night, for the £20 quid Disney wanted to stream it on their app, the cheeky bastards, we paid the same for a sofa with big cushions, blankets and a bottle of Rioja.

I thought it was really good fun. Loads of good late 60’s/early 70’s music, lovely Emma Stone, great costumes and Emma Thomson chewing the scenery. The story made zero sense and the Cruella’s voiceover got a bit grating but it was a fine romp. A few nice jokes for those of us who lived on 101 Dalmatians as kids too.
