I think because the game was actually shown on some TV station in Europe?

Not going to solve the international supporters problem, but the club have said all along that games that are shown in foreign countries cant be watched on hive in that country. They restated for this game too, theres a list of mainly smaller countires where it could be watched https://www.watfordfc.com/news/how-to-follow-reading-v-watford

At least this answers my earlier comment that the club should have the courtesy to inform subscribers. Thanks for posting the link.

I wonder what the tipping point is where they make more money on virtual ticket sales than actually having gates? There are a lot of match day expenses that you don't incur when there is no crowd (although you obviously lose out on other moneyspinners like concessions etc).

Be an interesting thought exercise, although we unfortunately don't have the data to work that out.

Unfortunately, VPNs don't appear to circumvent the restrictions. I VPNed into an available country for the Reading game and still couldn't watch the game.

I'm guessing they are locking eligibility based on your payment details rather than IP based geolocation.

A mate of mine lives in Paris and paid using his French Visa card, and he used a VPN via the Netherlands, and it was fine.

I'm from the Watford area originally, probably saw more home games than I missed between 1969 and 1985, but then moved abroad. I lived in Neuchatel for a while and followed Xamax as a local alternative (I even had a season ticket for 2 or 3 years), but I lost touch when they went bankrupt and had to restart in the amateur leagues... I suppose that's the difference between latching onto a club to watch football and really having it in your blood from childhood.

This isn't completely true. It isn't a question of whether the game is being shown, rather it is whether a particular country's broadcaster has the rights to the game. They can have the rights without showing it. So if a broadcaster has bought the rights to the whole of the Championship but only show one game, none of the other games are available either. That is my experience, anyway.

It's a really interesting question and a few figures have snuck into the public domain.

Just under 12,500 people purchased the £10 stream of the Watford v Luton match. That's the second-highest figure for any match streamed this season. The highest being Everton v West Ham in the EFL Cup, which had 15,452. Source: Daily Mail. Sunderland are averaging about 8,000 streams per match. The Colchester chairmain said his club earned £8,000 from streaming their home game v Bolton. Matchday income would have been £54,000, he said.

So, if the figures are correct, the Watford v Luton game grossed £125,000. I could make an educated guess at what it costs to stream a game – the film crew, the bandwidth, the cost of putting together Hornet Hive. Take VAT off the £10, plus a transaction fee and there's probably not a lot left.

At a conservative estimate, a full house generates around £400,000 in ticket revenue (if you take £20 as the average ticket price, which is probably on the low side even taking into account season tickets and concessions).

But the club also misses out on every other revenue stream. All the corporate revenue, which is significant, spending over the bars, programmes and merchandise. In the longer term, sponsorship revenues will be reduced dramatically too. Even perimeter advertising rates will fall, eventually.

Streaming matches is putting some money in the till during difficult times but it's a long, long way from replacing matchday revenue for a club of our size.

Is that 12,500 for Watford and Luton, or just Hornet Hive? If just for Watford, then you have to add in the streaming revenue from away games which would not have accrued to the club from a normal season.

According to the Mail article, which does not disclose its sources, it’s the total number of streams for the match.

The biggest challenge for the streaming model is that several people can all watch together for one payment. And, I suspect, a tenner is nudging towards the top end of what enough people would pay per match.

Will we be able to watch the game on Friday via the Hive ?

Heard we might not as it’s classed as a “Sky weekend game” and unlike the Boro game it’s away from home.

No, but for a penny less you can buy a Now TV Sky Sports day pass and watch Saturday's live games as well.

Not on hive as they cannot show a Sky away game unless it’s mid week.

For free, or do us season ticket holders still have to purchase a match pass?

Love to have this guy at his best leading our line right now, we would probably be top of the league because I'm sure he would have at least doubled our tally of goals scored so far.

Nah season ticket holders get it for free with the pass, however I wasn't sure whether it was being shown on Hive as its on Sky Red Button.

This isn't technically a Sky game (not a featured game anyway). Sky subscribers can watch on the red button, but I don't think the codes for ST holders (those who've paid their £20) will work. Most likely it'll be £10 to watch on the Hive.

Wycombe game should be free to ST holders with the code received as it's a featured Sky game I think.
