On his day was absolutely unplayable, but also had some stinkers. Par for the course for a full back really. I will remember some of his absolutely sublime goals though. All the best Daryl, a true gent and a star for us at times.
A very Dutch chap, very good footballer but not always a good defender. Good luck to you Darryl. I know a great physio in St Albans but I expect it's a bit late for that?
https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQEf30DX5o/ The club have posted a nice tribute to Janmaat, but still nothing for Mapps......it's very strange.
I doubt that very much. If he'd been to mine he would either be fit by now or we wouldn't have given him a 27 year contract ( I hope!)
I guess we have to assume the club have asked Mapps to be on standby in the event of an injury / transfer problem while he decides what he wants to do next in his career.
I guess they did have a season long section in the programme for his 10 years but not even an official line. Makes me think like Pearson he fell out with the Pozzos etc or potentially coming back. Perhaps didn’t want loads of media attention or fanfare ?
I think it's pretty certain that the club aren't sure if they'll be bringing him back. I'd imagine they hope to move on from him, but until he joins someone else, he is probably viewed as a back up target. It would look stupid to have a farewell post for him and then end up signing him again.
I don’t think Adrian Mariappa leaving Watford on a free transfer would cause a loads of media attention or fanfare to be quite honest!
Yeah, people do get built up around here when they are absent. Honestly, I’ve hated him since he ducked out of an aerial challenge with Mitrovic in our penalty box away at Fulham a couple of years ago. Absolutely encapsulated our weak, powderpuff mentality. Saw him coming and completely bottled even pretending to challenge. Glad he’s gone.
I was thinking more within our club.. Like a statement on the website or clips (ok maybe not that many..) on Twitter.
Excellent going fwd, hopeless when defending. Which is exactly what the geordies told us when we signed him. Made of glass.
Disagree about his defending, it was vastly superior to Kiko and Mapps's defending. If he didn't spend half his time on crutches he'd have been first choice Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
Fine, we disagree. Barely made any attempt to block a cross or tackle which is what I expect a RB to do. IMHO his defending was very similar to Kiko's, not his best attribute. Great going fwd.
To Gray's credit he actually looked decent in the Pre-Season games and has proven he can perform well at this level. I'm happy to let him start as he does have good off the ball movement and makes the right type of runs to pull defenders around and create space for Pedro and Sarr now that we aren't punting it 60 yards long and hoping for the best. Deeney I agree with you a lot more though. That Luton cameo was worse than Murray's movement.
His best moments were definitely his forward runs, agreed. But whilst he might not have blocked many crosses at least he was in position, Kiko just leaves a big hole because he thinks he's a winger. Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
Given his injury proneness, I imagine we offered him a longer contract, but reduced his basic salary (and potentially increased his appearance fee). Similar to the deal we made with Welbeck. That or they included a significant relegation wage drop clause. That would explain why they’ve both walked away from a their contracts without another club lined up, which is extremely rare when players drop down from the PL.
Explains why he was out for so long, bit unlucky by sound of it. http://sportwitness.co.uk/player-de...long-spell-sidelines-caused-normal-injection/
I guess why we gave him the new contract. That and the old Chinese proverb "you can never have too many right-backs".
Can't wait for the grey haired old fella to fondly recall the last time he was involved in a cup final
I wonder if he agreed to leave because he saw Ngakia has all the qualities to be top top top class(copyright of Harry Redknapp.) He wouldn't have been an option at lwb this season because we have King Ken so he saw the writing on the wall.
In today’s bonkers rumour of the day, he’s apparently been offered to Liverpool. ‘ NEWS: Liverpool have been offered Daryl Janmaat as short-term defensive cover and are considering bringing him on board. Janmaat has also been given a glowing reference by Gini Wijnaldum. Any deal for the player will be a short-term one. (@RealKevinPalmer)’ I’m a big Janmaat fan but even I can’t see the sense of Liverpool trying to add to their injury-hit backline by signing somebody who is quite often injury-hit himself.
If two ex-Watford full-backs are playing in the Champions League it would show what a great place this is for career progression. Pervis must be kicking himself.
