He has been completely transformed under Pearson, more so than any other player. Earlier in the season (and most of last, really) he often looked off the pace and too easily dispossessed in duels, now his energy levels are very good and he's winning tackles all over.
The decent thing needs to be done. Hughes to be given the club captaincy. He has earned it. Leads by example. Once upon a time Deeney did the same but now he is more of a hindrance than a positive. Hughes was superb again in midfield. Might have done a little better to close down the cross but we knew before the game about Soucek and his deep runs but no one stopped him. It would send a message to the slackers in the squad that there time might soon be up and those in the Deeney clique.
I will be very surprised if a top 6 doesn't snap him up in the summer, he's ready for it and he deserves it. Then England. If there is any chance he stays, and it's more remote than mr remote finding his lost cat remote in remote lane in remote town in remote land... then absolutely, make him captain and build the team around him. Give him shares in the club if it helps him stay. But he won't be staying. He will end up at spuds or arse or lesta.
Really? I think he's definitely looked our best player since the restart and has had a good season overall in such a woeful side, but I'm not seeing him as a "big 6" player at all, at least not yet. If we stay up then someone coming in for him hadn't even crossed my mind. In fact he's one of the ones I think may well even stay for a season in the Championship.
Hughes is the sort of professional anyone would want at their club. Does what he is told and gets on with it. Never moaned about being played out of position wide. Maybe his ACL injury has affected him but with a continual run of games he has improved continually. Rarely gives the ball way. Tackles well. Gets stuck in but still has the passing skills and technique. Because he sits deeper now less chance of goals but he can strike a ball. He can only get better and please Mullins make him captain.
Just lacks that bit of pace, or else I do think he would be a top 6 player (remember that top 6 clubs were all over him before his injury at Derby). I'm sure he stays if we stay up, if we go down, he might stay, but he definitely deserves to stay in the Premier League, although I'd be absolutely gutted if he did leave
I'd like him to stay but I don't think he'd be a major loss, overall. I mean, realistically, what is it that he's particularly great at? He's generally neat and tidy with the added bonus of having a bit of bite and work rate about him but he doesn't have any real, stand out qualities to my mind.
Sometimes neat and tidy with a biting tackle is all that's needed in a defensive midfield role. He lacks a little pace but overall would be very disappointed if he went.
LOL, he'd be a massive loss. As good as he's been in the Premier League, he'd be an absolute star in the Championship
Let's not forgot the post that you're quoting is from both before the Man City and Arsenal games. I was reasonably confident we were going to remain a Premier League side at that point.
I still thought we were ****, I just thought Villa and Bournemouth might both prove to somehow be even more ****. I was wrong.
Hughes just posted this. Does anyone understand what he's referring to? Lack of pre-season matches maybe? Will Hughes @wjhughes19 Here come all the ‘good to get 90 mins under my belt and nice to get a win blah blah blah’ tweets
I'd suggest it's frustration with injury but seems out of character to do that. More than likely he's referring to the lack of matches. Absolute shambles down there.
First pre season is not until 5th of of September and so far it seems its the only one lined up what the f**k are we playing at.
Another strange Tweet from Hughes Will Hughes @wjhughes19 Bring back @typicalfoot 9:48 PM · Aug 25, 2020·
It looks like he's taking the piss out of the majority of footballers who tweet the same old cliche's time and again. After I'd read your post #162 I went on to twitter and the first new tweet was Neco Williams being retweeted by someone I follow saying exactly what Hughes had posted except it was 60 minutes under his belt, not 90. Hughes seems a bit more intelligent and less needy than your average soccerball player. (And will be sold by midnight).
I think Hughes is just taking the mick out of every football player. It’s pre-season. Post match interviews done are always met with the same generic response, “good to get 90mins under my belt, great to get a win etc.” It’s the the same. Then that twitter account he said to bring back seemingly took the mick out of football players saying/doing the “typical” thing.
God there are some huge leaps to conclusions on this site at the moment 10 seconds looking at the tweet and it’s obvious as recluse says he’s referring to a twitter character called typicalfoot It’s a depressing place at the moment, cheer up people!
Expecting a big season from Hughes. When we signed him, he was seen as a bit of a playmaker but in the Premier League we never really had enough of the ball and our style was too direct for him to take on that role. He's proved himself to be adaptable and a smart footballer, playing out of position as an inverted right winger with no pace, then playing a more defensive role. Hoping that this season most of our play goes through him as he's by far and away our best creative passer of the ball. My tip for Player of the Year.. until we sell him.
