Good thing his parents decided a good education would be better for him than sending him to work as soon as possible.

Probably not as he's being linked with Barca, Man Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea and Atletico now. There's plenty of advantages/disadvantages to our model but one of the advantages is that we can (briefly - until they're sold) have players playing for us that would normally be beyond us. I agree that we should have a better success rate with these sort of players which links into what @Forzainglese mentioned about the day to day aspect. Personally I think the Pozzos are really mismanaging this aspect that could be a huge bonus to both us and Udinese. Look at the amount of players that are finding their feet at RB Salzburg and then move up to RB Leipzig when players at Leipzig are sold on, it's insane. But then RB have a consistent model of football that runs through all their clubs meaning it's easy for players to fit in and other sister clubs which we don't have.

Estupinan would have flourished in Udinese's 3 at the back formation this season (and we wouldn't have needed to have get scared about the buy option Osasuna had on him) but instead Udinese were forced to take Sema to play left wing back instead. There's been glimpses (aka sending Wilmot and Peneranda there) but it's not utilised enough or as effectively as it should be.

It's not that the players don't pay off. It is that they don't pay off for us.

The Pozzos get these players for dirt cheap and I'm sure their agent gets a tidy lump sum to grease the wheels, but we're left relying on complete punts whilst our first team dramatically declines in quality.

We'll sell any decent player like Estipinan for £15m without playing for us, but we'll use the bulk of that money to 'pay off debt' and bring in a 3m player from a struggling La Liga club who doesn't really want to be here, doesn't suit our style of play, and therefore spends the season keeping the bench warm.

Meanwhile the Pozzos get a stupid interest rate on their loans and as long as we survive by the skin of our teeth the value of the club doesn't depreciate.

Great for when they play us then...

Ultimately my key gripe about our owners underpins this. The success of our team is secondary or even tertiary. It's just a base for them to run their operation from and an occasional shop window when it suits them.

I take your point, but theirs' has hardly been a Jack Petchey style operation. They have developed the club in many ways and have continued to play a role in the community and the problems we may be in at the moment we would never have been in a position to worry about without them. After red helmet we were just about done for. And all this in a cynical and highly competitive Premier League environment.

Jack Petchey built at least 2 stands. Maybe 3. He invested in the infrastructure of the club. I dont recall there being a disconnect to the community during his tenure either.

Jack was hated though, because he failed to address key failings in the team. Can't really seen the difference with the Pozzos.

Jack was hated because he considered giving us £13k to sign Alec Chamberlain as “think yourself lucky you got that”.

Good property developer but not cut out as being a football club owner. He just didn’t get the business.

We signed more Watford legends in that era than the kickaball parasites we've signed under this mob.

The audited accounts to June 19 show the Pozzo's had lent the club £4.4m at an interest rate of 2.5%. Compared to the loans of £107m made by funders unrelated to the owners thats a pretty generous rate (the main funder has a £70m loan at 5.35%)

Rous, Rookery and maybe the Vic Rd stand was done under his ownership too

Just the two. He had nothing to do with the Rous Stand.

Rous was under Elton wasn't it in the mid 80s?

Bruce Dyer and Paul Furlong were sold to fund the Vicarage Road and Rookery End.

and he had nothing to do with Occ road stand - he had what we used to call the "new stand" built - i recall 50k being the number back in the 60's and we disliked him because we wanted some monry for the team - He sold Tony Currie about then for £27500!

I wasn't sure but it looks like you're right. A quick search suggests the lower tier was added in 1993 and Petchey left in March the following year.

The stand and upper tier was built in 1986 while Petchey arrived in 1990.

Adding the lower tier really only meant putting the seats in. The stand wasn't hovering in mid-air.

Bassini put in a new tv screen. Are we going to pretend he was on a par with the Pozzos as well?

He had a part in its completion and I'd said he hadn't. Just correcting my error.

I thought I remembered he was long gone before those seats were put in. God, I hate getting old.

Jack Petchey is a highly-esteemed (Still alive - 95) self-made businessman and philanthropist. He was an extremely shrewd operator and is reckoned to be worth over half a billion pounds. Not bad for somebody who left school at 13.
He saw a business opportunity in buying a football club, maximising its business-potential and eventually selling it on for a profit. He is probably the only owner to have made money out of WFC. He did a lot of good in the course of this, particularly building two new stands to improve the permanent value of the Club at relatively and much remarked-upon low cost. Yes, he sold 2 good players to do this, but the players are now old men and the stands are still there.
Oliver Philips described him as the most meticulously courteous owner he ever had to deal with.
But he was interested in business and not football and it showed in many ways. And when it was business-time to sell that is what he did. Elton, Watford's number 1 friend, but not necessarily the shrewdest of business operators, bought it back. In the process Petchey, who owned the debt the Club originally had from Elton (and which Elton had originally made clear was not going to be cashed) forced Elton to buy that debt again! So he was 100% within the law but ruthless.
So - mixed feelings about Jack Petchey.

A socially-distanced gathering I've got for Thursday has just been moved to Friday (damn those non-football fans!). I'm planning to watch the match on the free Sky link the club has provided, but does anyone know if I have to watch it live or can I watch it on demand when I get home? Can I record it? Thanks.

The Upper Rous was built literally over the old Shrodells Stand. Building the Lower Rous meant removing the Shrodells and exhuming several greyhounds (presumably losers).
