As much as I agree that Ake, Piatek and Loftus-Cheek are ideas of fantasy (mainly because the 3 of them would cost north of £100m and would have no interest in playing for us, even more so after this season), you yourself are overstating how close Smalling is to moving to Roma.

Roma have very very little money. They can’t afford to buy him permanently. Their current offer is another season on loan and then an ‘option’ to sign him in a year for £13m and it’s widely reported that United have rejected that out of hand. So perhaps that’s the part @With A Smile does in fact understand?

Although I do think an issue with Smalling for a club like us, is that it would be a lot of money for a player of his age - both in fee and wages. I expect he’s on 100k at least. Would be a good candidate as a new captain however if for some reason it did happen - which it won’t.

Cahill is the player we really should have moved for 12 months ago.

Another Serbian player I would suggest, and he's another striker too is Luka Jovic. It's really unrealistic, but he's not been named in the 23 man squad for Real Madrid game yet again. Some Serbian media think Madrid would sell him for 20-25 million. He can score with both legs and is decent in the air too. Again I say, pretty much impossible but he's another Serbian player I rate highly.

You no doubt know more about this fella. But his last season in the Bundesliga he was unbelievable. 20-25 on that form alone is a bargain. He wouldn't be the first quality player to fail at Real. Would be awesome signing but see him going to a lot better set up than Watford. Don't you think Mitrovic would be a more realistic option?

You at least admit that it's "really unrealistic", but you can go in the bin with 'With A Smile' for even bringing it up.

Of course I do. As I said it's pretty much impossible we get him. But you never know, if we stay in the prem anf he doesn't get many offers... He played less than 400 minutes all season for Madrid.

But Smalling isn't about to sign for Roma, they don't have the money to sign him

Did you not read where i said that it would be a wish list rather than suggestions.

If you want a more realistic suggestion, how about Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina. Six goals so far this season in Serie A despite usually being a substitute. Only 20 years old (born 2000), really strong forward with a good eye for goal. Was compared to Ibrahimovic.

Fine then here's my transfer "wish list" :
    - Steven Bergwijn
    - Hakim Ziyech
    - Dodi Lukebakio
    - Alexis Sanchez

I hope you found this post illuminating and worthwhile.

Looks a decent shout, so why not just suggest him to begin with?

  11. SerbianHornet

Because I was reading some Serbian news site and they claimed that Madrid want only 20-25 million for him, which I thought was a bargain and pretty close to our price range. As for Vlahovic I forgot to mention him, but I watched pretty much every Fiorentina game because of him and he looks like a really good player. He's maybe still a bit raw, but I really like him and I think he's better than what we have atm.

I have a nagging feeling we will go for Hart in the summer.

  19. Burnsy

Hart has wasted the last few years and even himself said he can’t see another PL club coming in for him. Also, firmly think Foster wouldn’t have signed a new deal without an indication that he’d remain first choice - Hart won’t move anywhere to be backup again. He’s got MLS written all over him if you ask me.

Wouldn’t touch Lallana or Clyne. Massive wages and injury prone. We need to sign players on the up rather than on the way down.

Lallana has been fit for quite some time as has Clyne. They just understandably can’t break into that Liverpool side.

Whilst I agree regarding signing player on their way up, this club has also done well at time’s when buying experience. It just needs to be considered that’s all. Many would have argued Foster was on his way down and that’s proved an astute buy. Lallana has obvious quality and Clyne is still young enough to get good years from.

Clyne went on loan to Bournemouth and has just been released so doubt wages are beyond us. Lallana might have been on big money but he too is being released - he won’t be able to command the money he was on and I’m sure he’d be aware of that.

Most of these players won't sign for us in the Championship anyway, including those which I might have suggested, so this thread might as well be put on ice for a bit.

That maybe true, but doesn’t make sense from a business standpoint, nor squad. We already have an ageing squad, we need to lower that, otherwise we’ll have a Palace situation. Lallana is fine, but his best days are gone imo. As for Clyne, he recently ruptured his ACL

  24. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Of course his best days are gone - else he would be kept on by Liverpool. That’s doesn’t mean he can’t be of use to clubs below that level. Whilst I agree about lowering the age profile of the squad, a considered addition over 30 shouldn’t be ruled out - we’d have been better this season had we signed Cahill last summer for example.

As for Clyne ‘recently’ rupturing his ACL - that was a year ago and he’s been fully fit since February. Hardly a write-off.

  25. Luca

Difference with Cahill is he’d be coming into a defence he’s better than - I’m not convinced Lallana is better than what we have in midfield currently. Also, according to the standard - Clyne still wasn’t fit in April

  26. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I’d ignore the Standard - as Clyne himself posted a video on his own Instagram showing he was fit and working on the pitch in February.

Lallana is a better No.10 than anyone we have at the club...namely because we don’t have a natural one at the club! His secondary position is on the left - and Deulofeu’s injury has shown we aren’t exactly blessed with options out wide either.

If, as expected, Pereyra moves on and money at the club is at a premium, Lallana would be a more than adequate replacement for a couple of years in my opinion. That said, I’d expect him to be snapped up by Rodgers at Leicester or return to Southampton.

Here is a list of free agents I would like us to go for:

-Malang Sarr (1999, French cb, OGC Nice): I've watched a few OGC Nice games where he played and I've been quite impressed with him. He is fast for a cb, isn't afraid to put in a tackle, great passer, and although he is a bit short(182) he has a huge leap so is good in the air too. He was linked with Chelsea 3 years ago, and with Arsenal this summer, but apparently Italian clubs are favorites to sign him atm.

-Angel Gomes(2000, English attacking midfielder, Manchester United): He's really young and was very highly rated at Manchester United, it was believed that he's more talented than Greenwood. Tbf I didn't watch him play many times apart from the u17 World Cup, but everyone else here probably watched him a lot more, as I know he's been English captain at various youth levels.

-Artem Dzyuba(1988, Russian striker, Zenit): He's a bit old, but I've been impressed with him every time I watched him. He's still Russia's starting striker too. I think I've never seen him loose a duel both in air and on ground, he also gets in very good scoring positions and is also pretty creative(14 assists this season).

There are more really good free agents, but I didn't put those who are completely unrealistic(e.g. Cavani, Willian, David Silva, etc) or those who were already mentioned (e.g. Lallana, Clyne, Longstaff, etc).

Just from reading some media this morning and seeing clubs linked with buying/selling certain players...

Two that are mentionable are Diogo Dalot at United and Mohammed Salisu at Valladolid.

Dalot being a FB that can play on both sides would be an attractive prospect. Very highly rated at Porto but hasn’t happened for him at United for whatever reason. Certainly young enough to fulfil his promise at 21. Cost them £19m so affordable if they would take a sensible loss - or even a loan deal.

Salisu is very highly rated and has a release clause of £10.9m which will make him attractive to a number of clubs. Saw him linked with United earlier this summer but this morning there were links with Southampton which might suggest clubs in our sort of mid-to-low tier could reasonably be expected to be in the market. Unlikely he would choose us in a crowd of suitors but the type of CB project we should be in the market for - does Gino have links with Valladolid? Could promise them a South American kid or two?

  30. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Being a left footed CB, I think Sarr will have a list of suitors far bigger than us. As good a signing as he’d be, I don’t think he’s attainable.

Angel Gomes is supposedly very promising but he’s leaving United because he can’t get a game - I don’t see how we offer him regular football either given his age and position. Pearson already has been linked with having a view than Quina is too small to operate in that position and Gomes is very similar in size and stature. Quina can’t get a game so unsure of the merits of having 2 players who do the same thing.

The Russian striker has a good scoring record and his stats seem to defy his physical appearance. 32 next month however and has never played outside Russia. I’d say there’s little chance we look at him as an option.

Gomes was never more talented than Greenwood. He's tidy, but nothing special. As Burnsy points out I don't see where Gomes would get a game for us.

He's almost 32, will be on a high wage, and will be playing Champion's League football again next season with Zenit. I don't see why we'd go for him, nor why he'd want to leave for us.

As I mentioned earlier, if we were to sign a striker from the Russian Premier League the only one which seems to make any sense would be Eldor Shomurodov who is still just 25.

Dzyuba is the top scorer in the Russian PL this season with 16 goals, but 7 of them were penalties (so 9 non-penalty goals). Meanwhile, Shomurodov has 11 goals, none of which were penalties. Shomurodov also has 6 assists, so isn't too bad on that front either. He seems good both in the air and on the ground. Plus he's doing all this while playing for a worse team.

  33. lowerrous

Dalot isn't a bad shout, but wouldn't happen if we're getting Ngakia.

Salisu might not be impossible if we stay up, but would probably end up out of reach.

I still find it weird speculating on all this when we're not even safe yet and so may not be anywhere near to being able to get any of them next season.

Torino are reportedly in pole position to sign Sarr, if that's true, I don't see why he wouldn't be interested in signing with us, as Torino isn't exactly a top club.

As for Angel Gomes, I think he'd maybe interested, and he'd get a lot more playing time than at United. United have Matic, Pogba and Fernandes as starters, plus Fred, McTominay, Mata, Andreas Pereira, Lingard and few other talented midfielders. We have Capoue, Doucoure and Hughes as starters and I think he's better than Quina and more attacking than Chalobah. There's also Cleverley, who is injury prone and probably past his best. He should be able to get lot more playing time here.

Dzyuba is a bit older than what we should be looking at, but he's quality and is better than any striker wr have atm. He's also proven his quality outside of Russian league, at the last world cup and in the champions league.

  35. SerbianHornet

Gomes broke to the first team two years before Greenwood despite being only a year older. He was also the captain of both England and United. But you could be right as you're English so you've probably seen more of both of them :)

Dzyuba also has 16 assists and is generally the superior player imo and I watch Russian league a lot.
