He’s got a plane on standby but the font on the banner is going to have to very small to fit all that on.

Seeing Holebas whip in the cross leading to the own goal made me realise that left back is a position where we've actually gone backward in quality over the years since we came up to the prem. I like Masina, but he's no match for prime Holebas.

I wonder how many positions that's true for.

Certainly up front, probably at centre back. Left back, as mentioned. Other positions are either similar levels of quality or only a small improvement. The only positions where we've made real steps forward in quality are on the wings. That's a big part of why we are where we are and it's pretty damning of our recruitment policy.

37 year old keeper, 40 year old sub keeper, 37 year old reserve left back. Sure there's quite a few more 30+.

I thought the Pozzos policy was to sign young players and sell them for a profit.

They gave up on their model when we got promoted.

That’s part of their model and still is, one of them came on today, one of them was playing and we sold two recently for vast profits.

The other part of their model is to try and look for ‘value’ by buying players with some sort of catch, as well as treating defence and attack with a moneyball approach and filling those positions with rubbish.

Yes, but in fairness, we can't rely on kidnapping a player every time we need a replacement, so with that in mind we can only aim so high.

Presume you mean early 80s, but even so... Barnes, Mo Johnston... Struggling to think of anyone else who'd replace any present incumbents. But please, enlighten me.

That's it for me this season.
Of course, l will always be a Watford fan, but the sack of sh*t squad we have now has left me feeling that l have better things to do with my time.
I said earlier this week that if we lose to Southampton, then we are down and l'm finished for the season.
All the confidence of the fans has been drained away.
The players are not trying or bothered and have zero confidence on the pitch.
I wish all the fans well who remain positive, but we are a laughing stock.
I think of Wigan,Sunderland,Ipswich and the rest who got relegated and then went into freefall. Will Watford join this group?
Right now, the immediate future looks very bleak.
The players and club should be embarrassed at the predicament they find themselves in.
No fight from the players at all.
I enjoy all the chat on here and will keep looking in, but l am done for now.

Didn't we do the same last season or the season before ? Won with an own goal despite not having a shot on target ?

Those stats are just ridiculous, imo. If a goal is scored it is a shot on target, regardless of it being an own goal or not.

Btw, we beat Hull City 1-0 without any of our players having a shot on target. Dawson scored an own goal.

The best odds for Watford to get relegated are 2/1. I have just had some money on as the offer is ridiculous and the dumb bookies do not realise how bad we are. I do not recommend gambling by the way but nearly every time I bet the bet loses so either I win an easy 100 quid or we see an upturn in form.

Pedro, Welbeck and Sarr must start for the rest of the season as the forward line.

Sorry, that stat about shots on target isn't referring to this match is it, surely? Because we had several shots on target, mostly from rebounded corners, unless I'm going mad...

I am generally very positive and try and look at the plus points from games even when we’ve been poor but that was absolutely incredible. I had to stop watching after 60 mins thankfully to go and play golf.
Happy to hear that Pedro got on and seemed ok and Welbeck looked alright.
Apart from that not a single player can hold their head up high.
I’ve seen Deeney get a lot of stick and quite rightly as he offers no goal threat but when he does win headers he has no support. Nobody running in behind or looking for the knockdown. That’s not to say he played well because he didn’t. We need a forward busting a gut to get in the box but whenever Sarr did get in a position to cross we had nobody attacking the front post or basically in the box.
Masina. Whenever he got it he just lumped it in the box. We never wait for an opportunity by keeping the ball.
Capoue. What an utter waste of time
That’s probably unfair on him because that is probably every player that started the game. So slow, dreadful passing, no hard work, no pressure on the opposition, absolutely nothing
A complete and utter disgrace. Ive not been this pissed off for many years
Oh and Pearson can **** off as well as he just doesn’t look bothered. As for the three players who were partying, they owe the fans a massive apology, a total lack of respect
We are done, not a chance we can stay up

I think blocked shots don't count as on target. They have to be saved by the GK I believe. Could be wrong, but I used to think the same when I saw stats so low when we'd had a few of those.

The problem is that we won't get any overhaul until we get relegated. As others have said, i believe that if we somehow fluke another season in the PL, we'll sign the same old dross we usually do, experience the same head coach merry-go-round and the fundamentals at the club simply will not change.

I for one am happy for us to go down if it means we can rid the playing squad of the cancer within and start afresh, with younger and hungrier individuals who have the drive to succeed on the pitch that our 'players' have long since forgotten.

I can't argue with this. Deeney needs to go. Welbeck looked better than him this evening, Sarr is the only player who seemingly wans to make something happen and Joao Pedro looks like an exciting talent. Let's do this please.

Yup, safe to say we're down, with Norwich and Bournmouth. The owners have brought it on themselves. The only consolation is that, for the remainder of this sh!t show of a season, I haven't wasted a fiver per match day on car parking and a tenner in Fridays.

The first seven league games under Pearson and the Liverpool home game in fairness, when not coincidentally we had both Deulofeu and Sarr in the team for almost the whole part. I'd say there was a discernible style there, a mix of the attacking of Silva and the pressing and good defensive play of Flores in his first spell before he lost the plot, with better motivational skills and tactics than Gracia. I'd even go as far as saying that that was the best team (or at least seemed to be at the time) that we'd had in the five seasons since promotion - just amazing how just one of those two players being out can turn gold (or bronze if you like) into the rustiest of base metals.

That said, while it seems clear that some of us have underestimated the detrimental effect GD being out would have on the team, none of us could have envisaged just how bad we'd become since the restart. What could be the reasons? Would we be this bad if the season had continued without the massive break (longer than any pre-season)? At least as recently as mid-May, just over a month before the season resumed, we were still uncertain whether or not the season would be cancelled. Did that affect the mindset of the players, many of whom I imagine were resigned to the fact that it might not restart, and may indeed have hoped that wouldn't be the case (I'd like to think because of the prospect of playing many matches in hot weather and the very short pre-season which would affect their fitness, rather than avoiding having to put in any more effort to stay in the Premier League, but maybe I'm giving them too much credit), and so once the season actually resumed, they didn't feel up to the battle ahead? Were they expecting GD to have recovered from his injury by now and the disappointment that he still hasn't has killed their spirit, whereas if it had been business as usual, they might have just accepted the situation and be prepared to plough on without him?

Sorry, I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, and this might be better left for another thread, but I'm wondering whether others agree with me that the long lay-off has negatively affected our chances of staying up?

In brief, my answer to your overarching question is that it's possible that it may have had some detrimental effect, but it's nowhere near a good enough excuse; it's literally everyone involved's job to stop that from happening, Pearson most of all, and let's not forget that every other team suffered the exact same setback if so.

On top of that, let's not forget that after the miraculous Liverpool mirage, we meekly surrendered to Palace the very next week, well before the shutdown came into effect.

I'm not a Watford fan, but I feel I need to point out to you that Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa are worse than you and the last two have a tougher run-in.
You will stay up, and in September you'll have the same number of points as Liverpool and Man City.

Kind of you to say, but no way are they all worse than us. Watford are finishing the season on 28 points and will rightfully be relegated. I hope Villa stay up as a) I hate Bournemouth, b) I have a Villa supporting mate and c) It’d piss off our fat, useless captain.

Yeah I haven't forgotten about Palace, but that wasn't as bad as the last two games was it? We at least put some effort in throughout in a tight game that could have gone either way.

I'm not trying to excuse our awful displays of late, just speculating that the long break may have had a difference - it must feel really weird to be playing club football in June during a fast-moving schedule with just a three week break before the next season, and it must be hard to shake off that kind of lethargy for some players. Would we really have had just one point in three winnable games (yes I'm including Leicester in that, because they're not in good form and even Norwich beat them recently) had it been BAU?

Well the other teams having difficult run-ins is the most likely thing to save us now. However bad the others have been however, none of them have looked as **** as we've been in our last two games...

Seem to recall us giving it a go early on, conceding, and then getting squeezed out of the game by a very very solid defensive side. Struggle to find any positives out of the last two games really (Welbeck hasn't been atrocious I guess, Joao Pedro looked OK? )

I can't really see what our tactics are now, we are terrible and making too many mistakes. Kabasele needs to come in for Dawson next game because CD was shocking, he is slow, makes mistakes, cant play a pass. I wouldn't mind seeing Welbeck start instead of Deeney at least we may be able to play on the counter a little bit and he would have more chance of keeping up with Sarr and getting in the box for crosses. Pereyra looked okay at times today but he wasn't brilliant
