I'd start Gray and Quina. Southampton players won't want to get near them.

Saints wouldn't need too. Gray would just be stood offside.

The Burnley game was awful to watch. No fight from the players at all.
I don't see anything changing and l can't see where we will gain another point from.
2-0 to Southampton, if not by a far larger margin.
I can only hope to be proven wrong.

The prospect of watching this fills me with dread; the kind when you realise you have an essay due the next morning or something. I'd say now that I'm not even sure I'll be able to, but I don't doubt that when it comes time I won't be able not to.

That being said, I am working on some mental calculations to determine exactly when I switch it off again: if we go down by more than a goal in the first half, I think that's the limit for me. Other scores/setbacks will depend partly on the team display and attitude on offer on-the-day, and it will be factored in to my decision.

Great chance to put some distance between us and Villa, I'm sure our boys won't need this spelled out to them and will be right on in from the first whistle just like they were at Burn....

Oh forget it. We'll be ****, Deeney will be baffled as to why we weren't up for it and we'll carry on sleepwalking into relegation.

We’ve been presented with another opportunity to put some clear blue water between us and the other relegation candidates. Perfect situation again.

The team needs changing. We cannot keep beating our head against a brick ball with the same s**t week in, week out. Give others a chance, and stop starting Deeney EVERY ****ing game.

    ----------------------- Foster ------------------------

    Femenia - Kabasele - Dawson - Masina

    ------------- Doucoure - Hughes ---------------

    ----------- Sarr - Pereyra - Pussetto ----------

    ---------------------- Welbeck -----------------------

Pace on the wings, a bit of craft from Pereyra behind the striker where I've always thought he looks a better player, and the least of all evils up front in Welbeck. Pedro the surprise package off the bench.

I'd have some of that as long as they just don't spanner aimless balls forward.

Sounds good in theory, until you remember that they lumped long balls up to Gray when Deeney went off...hoofball is just wired into their systems...

  14. GoingDown

We don't have a single footballer available at centre back. Two cloggers who are so scared of the ball that they put it out for a throw at every opportunity inviting pressure. Just watch tomorrow. Absolutely petrified of the ******* ball at their feet.

I reckon we could have the whole classic AC Milan back line, and he'd still be reduced to hoofing it forward

Part of the problem is that there is a complete and utter lack of movement up front. When you've got Deeney standing completely static up top just calling for it on the head then we are always going to go long.

The fact we continue it when he's off the pitch (which let's be honest, is genuinely hardly ever), I think is more about panic and a lack of practicing anything other than that one single tactic. That's obviously on Pearson and the coaching team.

But the man starts almost every single game and very regularly plays the full 90. He is the reason we are so one dimensional. We are conditioned to play to his "strengths" and little else.

I actually thought Welbeck looked slightly better than he had against Burnley. Still pretty poor, but better. He is definitely more mobile and much quicker than Deeney, and he will move into the channels and make runs off the shoulder, which is far harder to play against than a big lump just looking for a "scrap" who stays completely still and has the pace of a sumo wrestler.

Going to be played in gale force winds tomorrow. So no fans and the ball being permanently blown of the pitch. Has 0-0 written all over it. So 0-2 (Ings 1, 90+5).

Deeney is what he is, and he's OK at this level, wins most of his duels and scores the odd goal. Anything more would be like gold dust, there's no guarantee that Cucho, Suarez, a fit Welbeck (if that's not a contradiction in terms lol), or indeed anyone else we could get would do a better job, but yes, we do need someone better than Gray to push Deeney for that lone striker role.

Also, if we are to persist with Deeney game in, game out, year in, year out, he needs help from everyone else. We know Deeney isn't going to be making those runs, so we should be demanding Doucoure and our wingers to be busting a gut to get into position too

You cannot keep playing with a striker who doesn't make runs, who doesn't really score goals and who doesn't give defenders really anything to worry about but a bit of a physical battle, which the vast majority are capable of handling comfortably. Deeney was a good player, but he's about to turn 32, his prime is clearly now long since over and the decline is very much in full flow. We have to move on from him.

Let’s hope we lose this as that will
Make relegation more likely and the Pozzos might finally sell up and end this miserable period of the clubs history

Hull almost got an unlikely win that would have given them a sliver of breathing space, but they're a crisis club at the moment so unfortunately I think they're doomed. Hopefully there are 2 other teams who can pick up enough points to relegate the scum

We have to look on the bright side.

Other teams are just as **** as us (the bottom five has barely picked up more than a point between them since the restart).

Were it not for a moment of extreme naivety towards the final whistle and/or a short period of madness on the stroke of halftime vs Everton we would've been unbeaten at the Vic since Flores got his deserved marching orders, as it is we've gained a creditable 15 points out of 24 in a run that included Man Utd, Wolves, Spurs, Liverpool and Leicester. Contrary to what many have claimed, the team isn't lacking spirit and effort, as witnessed by our last gasp equaliser against Leicester. It's our form away from home which is a large part of the problem - too defensive, not courageous enough (Bournemouth apart) - is that down to the players' inherent mentality or Pearson's tactics, or both? I don't know.

But the problem is we won't have the support to cheer us on, and as we saw when we unexpectedly beat Man U and especially Liverpool and were hanging on vs Wolves with ten men, that can really make the difference. I get the feeling that many of our players have the mentality of kids - they only seem fired up when they have the crowd behind them or get flack after a poor performance when the motivation should always come from within. Surely they want Premier League football next season, as it's unlikely that any club at this level would sign them if their performances lead us to relegation?

    Welbeck will probably get injured.

Can he cope with 2 days in 4 days.

Anyone else feel the pathetic, unfounded sense of optimism, despite knowing that half the players are currently sat scrolling through Instagram without giving a **** about tomorrow's result and the other half will cack their pants around 4:15pm.

It's the hope that kills you.
