Many moons ago there was a thread with some fantastic help and tips for those of us who like a game of poker. Some quality stuff from PYA and Old Man Ray. I've tried in vain to find it but can't. Can anyone help?

Before my time on this forum, but I do like a game of Texas Hold'em. If you have any questions PM me.

It was an excellent thread full of some fantastic advice from people who were very good at the game. I recently stumbled across an old pokerstars account that had about £30 in it that I'd forgotten about. I went down to £10 before I started remembering the best way to play, (ie being patient), and it's rising steadily now. I really wanted to reference that old thread because of the quality advice inside.

Yeah I know Clive, I can get the family a decent meal and a pint in Wetherspoons with that, (as I did on Friday when I took Miss Diamond back to Uni). I think it was from back in the day when I was bonus bashing the bookies and had accounts open left right and center. No interest strangely.

The best tips I can provide are

    1. Be patient
    2. Play the cards not the other players
    3. Understand the probabilities.

    1. Is the simplest, getting the balance right is key, that comes with experience.
    2. Nothing worse than an opponent either giving it large or winning a bluff, the cards will ultimately beat those sort of players.
    3. In any given hand of 2 you are dealt along with the community cards you should be able to work out roughly what your chances are...

Suppose you are dealt a pair of 8s for example, on the face of it, that's a decent hand and worth staking to stay in; however when the flop comes out there is a high probability that at least one card will be higher than an 8, and depending upon the number of players still in there would be a good chance of someone now having a higher pair than you do. By counting the remaining cards that are unknown to you 2 from 47 will be the other 8s, in other words ~4% of the remaining cards.

Some of the best chances are when you have two of a given suit and two more are on the table after 4 cards. 9 of the remaining 46 cards will be of that suit, effectively giving you a 19.5% chance of getting another of that suit.

I recently downloaded an app which gives you a choice of actions in given scenarios and you get marked right or wrong, according to probability, assuming nothing about opponents behaviour.

Just to train on the probabilities. It made me realise just how wrong I often was, not that I've ever played much

I play poker as my full time profession so a poker thread would be right up my alley!

Had a read through the whole thread as it was before my time on the forum, great stuff (though some of the advice is not necessarily what I would also advocate)

Just saw my post about losing with quad kings to quad aces. Crazy, me and my mates still speak about it to this day whenever we play poker.

    Great thread.

Haha! I read the full thread and still fell for it :(.

First hand of a 45 man tournament I was dealt KK. Someone else had AA. You can guess the rest. First bl**dy hand.

OMR always said never to play the first 10 hands or so of an online tournament. That's why!

Following on from odds. Easy way to approximate is rule of 4, rule of 2.

If you have 4 to a flush as Otter says there are potentially 9 cards left to hit. If you are all in on flop it is approx 9*4 = 36% to hit, on turn 9*2 = 18% to hit.

Open ended straight draw = 8*4=36% all in on flop, 8*2=16% all in on turn.

Only approximates with a few percent but should be enough to work out good/ball call if facing an all in - you'll also have to consider if you have overcards as well which might give you more outs and you can add them into the calculation.

Also learn all the pre-flop match ups as this is vital at the end of tournaments to determine where to move all in and also a tighter range where to call all in. Opponent dependent of course.
