Contrast it with Hughes' movement in the same goal. He makes a sprint towards the near post even though he knows he probably won't get the ball but attracts the defender who would've been covering Gray, leaving him completely free.

A heartfelt interview from the big man to the Daily Mirror https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/online-trolls-made-troy-deeney-13063554

    Key sentence:-

I lost the love because the fickleness, all the pussyfooting around in football, was really getting to me."

Troy is a thinker. Of course, who can deny that he is absolutely right. Is there a more fickle creature than the super sunday sky sports flash bang premiership put-a-bet-on premiership supporter? One moment you're triumphantly hammering home a goal v Leics that is historic and you're a demi-god. Everyone wants a bit of you. Sky sports sponsored camera tour of Barrat's mansion, pool table and whirlpool with gold taps. Mentioned as a possible for a last feasible shot at the world cup with England and really top off a rags to riches career.

Then the next moment you can't do right for doing wrong and the stupids are sending you obscene messages about your kids.

Is there anyone amongst us who wouldn't consider saying screw this for a game of soldiers, I've got enough money already, I'm off. I certainly would. No wonder the fella needs a shrink.

    Key sentence:-

“What made me do it? People writing me off – I didn’t love it at the time, but I love it now because they will have to come back begging (for forgiveness)... that’s the part I can’t wait for."

Who can doubt his determination? Who can doubt that the blood is pumping in his veins? He wants to stuff it down the throats of those skulking in the shadows lowlife, here today and gone to spuds tomorrow, lilly livered, poison-tongued half wits. When Troy is determined it is a fierce determination.

“This time last year, I had just had an operation, I missed pre-season and was busting my b****cks to catch up, and I probably over-tried because I got sent off twice."

My frustration was always going to come out and a lot of the comments made about my daughter were being made around that time. Now I’ve got a feeling this year could be the best yet.”

Me too big man! Me too! Viva Troy Deeney! Go out and give it everything one last time.

Golden boot winner and sold to Everton for £110 million in July. You read it here first.

Troy is Troy. Has been written off time and time again and bounces back. Personally, I wrote him off when we first signed him, as I didn't think he'd turn into much (think he was often played wide to) - I think I said somewhere on here years ago he'll be the next Ellington.... I was wrong, very wrong.

Wouldn't put it past him to improve this season. Though I still think we're short up top. He's in my fantasy football team as always - so better score 20.

Oh great, it's "Honest Troy" media time again. Been at least a few months since we've had a variation on the "heartfelt" Deeney puff piece.

Ever notice how nothing's ever his fault? The latest in a long line of Deeneyisms is that he only got sent off against Huddersfield and tried to pop Joe Allen's eyes out because he was frustrated and people had been rude about his daughter online.

This post goes in the weird bucket along with the Pozzo out thread.

He’s fessing up to losing focus and desire last season for a series of reasons. The man is a club legend who has done more for us than any single player in the last 20 years, but it’s the type of fickle behaviour you show that sit behind the comments in his interview.

To answer the question that many a miserable sod ask ‘are the Pozzos / Deeney immune from criticism’? In short, yes they are. Both have to work very very hard in my book to draw criticism after everything they have achieved for Watford.

People moan about the club not signing players, but for what reason other than cash would a player want to come to this club? You’ve got fans who make their mind up after 2 minutes that you’re *****, while at the same time generating zero atmosphere at the ground - it’s small time club behaviour whichever way you cut it. I’d even suggest that we’re getting close to West Ham in this regard.

I’m backing both Deeney and Gray to have a good season ahead, starting today.

There's nothing fickle about it. You can support a person when they're part of the team and have been behaving professionally, and criticise them when they haven't. Deeney came back a stone overweight last season but that wasn't really his fault, he got himself suspended twice but that wasn't really his fault either.

Much like how over the course of several Honest Troy interviews like the one this week, he slowly adapted the events of the night out leading to him going to prison - from full contrition, to only defending his brother, to only kicking the person on the floor in the head because he thought he had a knife. In the very interviews where he claims to be taking responsibility for his actions, he's actually avoiding it.

Life's complex - it's possible to like Deeney for what he's done on the pitch in the past, admire his charitable work, but still dislike other aspects of his behaviour. It's a bit cultist to suggest you can't ever criticise an individual.

He’s not pretending to be a perfect person - he is clear on the fact that he is a flawed individual

I judge on based on what he’s done for this club and his leadership qualities. Without the likes of Deeney and Gomes it’s not easy to survive a premier league season. These are the leaders of the squad and dressing room.

Gracia clearly believes in him and he’s put the effort in so let’s see the results

I was a critic of Deeney and Gray last season, but the club seems to be putting their faith in them to be our main strikers as they have not brought in any new ones, and as the management team get to see how these guys have been performing in training etc. who are any of us to argue with their assessment.

Therefore I'm hoping that TD & Gray's pre-season form are the reason we have not invested in new strikers because maybe they have looked as though they are back to their best, and their best should be good enough to keep us up and possibly even project us into the top 10. So lets all get behind them and hope they both get into double figures on the score sheet at the very least.

I thought he put in a good performance today. Not exceptional but he worked damn hard for 90 minutes. It was very different to the troy of last year and he should have scored. I remain confident that he will get 10+ goals this year.

He was slagged of because his performances on the pitch were pathetic. There's nothing fickle about it.

Obviously insulting his kids is way out of line. But calling him a useless fatty fat bum is fine I reckon, as when he plays well he gets called a legend

Agreed. He does look in better shape this season, and so I will in turn be easing off the overweight jibes (though I will miss them, I found them a mildly amusing side-line).

He was still largely ineffective yesterday, was dead on his feet long before the 90 minutes was up, and could do with upgrading, but at least compared to last season his very presence on the pitch didn't feel insultingly strange and unwarranted.

Agreed. Lots on here have given him stick because of the appalling condition he's started the last two campaigns in and the forum "in" jokes tend to stick, but you've got to be a **** of the highest order to actually make it personal.

Doesn't matter how good a player is, if you don't play as a team you won't win as many as if you do, yesterday Holibas set up and helped Pereyra to enable him to score the goals, another day it will be Troy being set up by hughes or someone else! Better to have 11 players on the field working as a team, than 2/3 exceptional players not getting the ball and sulking!

If Troy can maintain his energy and enthusiasm we will prosper.
Everyone can have a dip in form but what concerned me last season was the manner in which he became frustrated with himself and more to the point, his team mates. He was not my idea of a leader.
If the sports psychologist can help him it will benefit us all and he can prove anyone who wrote him off wrong, again!

Genuine question to those of you who go to most or at least a lot of the games. In the actual stadium (so not Twitter, this forum etc) has Troy received much stick the last two seasons? Many / any occasions of him being boo’d or lots of loud negative comments being chucked out by more than just a handful of people? Or has he mainly received support or just been left alone?

Well he isn't booed at the games but sure people get frustrated..

Apprantley some lady on the radio said his goal celebration yesterday upset her little lad.

    Did anyone see this ?

So would people say it’s fair to assume his annoyance / negativity towards any Watford fans has come from sources such as twitter?

If so, and IF he was ranting at the supporters Sunday then he needs to drop that now. A few keyboard warriors aren’t representative of thousands of people who go to games and have shown him more love and support than most players in the last 20 odd years.

I'm hoping Holebas scores in the next game and does a turd in Nath's lap. Totally acceptable if he is simply expressing his opinion.

Apparently she rung in (must have been 3CR as I am sure had it been 606 it would have got more coverage..)

  32. Considering how total **** he was last year (for whatever reason) I thought supporters gave him a lot of leeway.

This year he's looking good and should be feeling the luv.

There were a couple of "older" ladies on the coach who were saying his goal celebration was over the top and insulting, in fact they seemed quite upset about it the sensitive dears. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it were them, (though they had no kids with them).

After his comments pre season im not sure why anyone is surprised by his reaction:

"What made me do it? People writing me off – I didn’t love it at the time, but I love it now because they will have to come back begging (for forgiveness)... that’s the part I can’t wait for."

So ******* thick its unreal for two reasons. First, as people quite rightly point out the abuse he gets does come from a minority of the fanbase (ignore it mate), the majority have supported him. Secondly he needs to get it into his head that our fans had every right to give him stick considering he is on big bucks whilst we pay quite a lot of money to see him play, yet he still cant manage to keep himself fit. Bit of an insult that in my opinion. If I were on that much money I would at the very least keep myself in good shape.

Im glad hes sorted himself out, but he shouldn't have the mindset of "**** you haterz im back". He should never have got into that poor condition in the first place. He should be thanking us for at least sticking with him, as he was the one out of order, not the loyal fans he started swearing at on Sunday who have put up with an overweoght Deeney the past two years.

Sorry, just hate his "me vs world" attitude.
