First, factor in tax to that 40m. I don't pretend to know how much that would come out to, but HMRC is undoubtedly getting a fat wedge.

Secondly, it's worth noting that we're likely to be receiving the Rich money in installments, since that's commonplace with most expensive transfer deals. It would be unusual if Everton just wrote us a cheque for the full amount outright (albeit not impossible).

Thirdly, 57m in loans is almost 50% more than the 40m Rich fee (before tax) and at some point those need to be paid off, because the interest isn't going away.

Fourthly, in prior years we've sold players too. Ighalo would have factored into the numbers quoted, for example.

Just some stuff to bear in mind. :)

I suppose the point is - other clubs receiving that transfer "windfall" (even if it was in instalments) would have spent it on players. It looks like we have decided, certainly for the time being, to offset it against other costs. So we could spend more than we have, notwithstanding your first post. It's just that we have chosen not to do so, perhaps because we would prefer to be prudent.

    Funny old game football.
As a club who have had some less savoury owners from bonser through to baz, should we really moan about Gino? The Pozzo treat football clubs as a business, not a vanity and I can only see that as a good thing for us supporters

It’s crackers. In the PL era pre-Pozzo, on the two occasions we managed to drag ourselves into the top league we were woefully ill equipped for it. We were not even close to having the resources to keep ourselves up, or even make a fight of keeping ourselves up.

On the second occasion we went up we went mad after getting relegated and almost wiped ourselves off of the football map. The Pozzos have come along and kept us in the PL for a minimum of three consecutive seasons, sorted out our embarrassment of a ground and signed players from Juventus and Barcelona. They are not beyond criticism but Jesus Christ be careful what you wish for people.

Maybe if we had a whip round of all the forum members we could raise enough to buy the club off them. You could be chairman. I'm sure there'd be loads of applicants from the forum for head coach and head of recruitment.

I'd hope you'd allow more spending of the millions, if not billions, we have due to our lofty status in the EPL. If it all goes wrong, I'm also certain all of us on here will give our continued support to both you and the club.

The Richy money will almost certainly be structured over a period of time. That’s why we were putting in bids for players like Dawson offering to pay £2.5m over 4 years. The Richy deal was a great deal, but the owners understandably didnt want to spend it all before we even had it.

Whilst I am not suggesting they should have spent all the money there is a well established market out there from specialist lenders who will advance the selling club funds on the strength of the sale contract even if the core sale figure (excluding add ons) is structured over many years . We used it last year it to receive funds early for the sale of Behrami

The accounts from last season show us everything we need to know. The TV money was about £100m but player wages were £75m, 66% of our turnover.

The money in the PL is irrelevant, everyone gets the same or more and being a tiny club our additional income hardly makes a difference.

Once you factor in wages and ignoring any money spent on infrastructure there is probably about £30m spare. To compete we either need to build up mountains of debt (that’s if the Pozzos remain as our owners, they are not billionaires and cannot simply bank roll is indefinitely) or make money from player sales.

The only other alternative is that we are bought by a billionaire who fancies us as a play thing.

The only way you can really truly profit financially from PL is do a Norwich, get promoted every now and then but don’t spend any money and just trouser the profits.

I think the owners are doing the best job they can at keeping us at the top table. People need to forget about the £100m+ TV money because once you’re in the PL that just about covers your wage bill.

Personally having experienced both I’d rather be treading water in the PL than the championship. People have short memories, the Pozzo championship years were great of course, but before that all we did was manage a promotion push roughly every 10 years and the rest of the time was struggle and mediocrity. We pretty much had to operate as we do now, but in a crap league fishing for crap players.

It would be very difficult to exist indefinitely as a championship era Pozzo club, those years were great and the football was fantastic, but they obviously want a return on their investment so we were never going to hang around forever in some weird limbo in the championship. As and when we get relegated they’ll either cut their losses and we’ll go back to grinding mediocrity in the championship/league one, or we’ll get promoted again within one or two seasons. I’m not exactly sure what people want?

Are the loans true 3rd party loans or just loans from within the Pozzo group which would simply be netted off against proceeds when they sell the club ? Did I read interest was base rate plus 6% ? That suggests high interest back to the owners as part of tax planning to minimise taxable uk profits.

A genuine question - With FFP, how do teams like wolves and Fulham spend £100m on transfers and add on the wages but still stay within the rules? How have Everton and West Ham spent so much? Surely they are all outspending what they'll get in league and tv money by a long way.

It can't all be wrapped up in billionaire loans can it as they must have to justify it at some point?

  23. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

It’s a good question, but as I found out only the other day FFP doesn’t apply to the premier league, so clubs can go as beserk as they want.

It’s really there to prevent championship clubs cheating/over stretching themselves to get to the PL at the expense of clubs who stay within the rules.

I suspect Wolves and Fulham, certainly Wolves completely flouted the FFP rules last season but now they’re promoted it doesn’t matter.

Everton and WHU are being bankrolled by wealthy owners. I’d imagine technically it’s structured in the same way as our owners structure it, i.e. loans to the club but in the case of Everton and WHU they’ll just be written off down the line or never paid back.

I wasn’t aware of that, although it only seems to apply to wages. It also explains why wolves and Fulham have gone crazy because they’re allowed to bring their wage bill up to £67m. Obviously what they’ve done this season will not be sustainable next season and likewise why it isn’t for us.

I’d imagine the part about increasing revenue streams to offset any in increase in wage growth could be manipulated by some clubs very easily too? A big sponsorship deal from one of the owners companies?
