Good job we're not starting this season with Cleverley ruled out and Doucouré, Chalobah, Deulofeu, Okaka all not being fit enough to play a single minute of pre-season then!

We still have 5 players loitering in the squad who won't make the final list. I'd say Zeegelaar/Kaboul, Dja Djedje, Foulquier, Marreh and Boom-Long.
And that's without buying more than 6 players this window.

I'd love to see the currently inflated squads of West Ham, Everton, Fulham, Leicester and Wolves.

    A thing to remember about the above sides and their mass signings;
there are a lot of players coming from the continent never having played under their new manager,
never having played in their new league,
never having met or played alongside their new team mates.

Better players should cope but it's not always the case. Rarely does a side with an influx of players live up to individual player reputations.
And just because other clubs have thrown money at individuals this window, it guarantees them nothing - Andre Gray last season anyone?

The club said way back they were looking at a settled squad this season and I admit to thinking they were panicking when we'd bought 6 players early. I genuinely thought another 6 or 7 would come in. Not all first team players, squad players and some youngsters mostly. But they were true to their word.

This window the main focus seems to have been getting cover for Cleverley in particular and Chalobah as he comes back to match fitness.
Also a forward but I think the inability to get rid of an injured Okaka has hindered that. But if Penaranda wasn't deemed up to providing cover then a striker would definitely have been bought.
Wilmot has come in so the need for Britos or Mariappa (and especially Kaboul!) to be relied upon as frequently, in my mind, are lessened.

The squad can always be better, there's no argument about that.
Being able to strengthen within your means and not leaving yourself saddled with unwanted players is more difficult.

As it stands, the 5 we need to get out either on loan or permanently, as mentioned in the first line, are not deemed 1st team players or even 1st team squad members unlike the sides I mentioned who have bought en masse and will have many players deemed 1st team players sitting idle if they can't be sold. In that way the club has managed the window well.

Whether individual supporters believe a number of our current squad is good enough is another thing altogether but as it stands they are because after last season the club is still in the Premier League.

So, in short, everyone should be happy, no one should really be questioning the club or the recruitment, and anyone who does is a bad fan and/or miserable.

    The usual then.

Twitter is even more negative than this forum.

I think we may yet sign a striker on loan before the end of August.

If 2 of Kabasele Prodl and Cathcart stay fit and find some form we should then be OK.

It could well bring great things, I and others could be completely wrong and I hope we are, but that doesn't change that at the moment I find our business in the transfer window, and thus the state of the squad, to be extremely poor.

I’m going to try and look at the situation positively.

When we got promoted there was a big gap in quality between the squad that got us promoted and the type of players that we could then start to bring in. For example at the time I thought Capoue was an amazing signing, and a player we could never have dreamed of signing in the championship.

Over the past few seasons we’ve gradually back filled the squad with players of better quality. Now the difference between the players we’ve got and the players we can realistically get in is very small. We’re all left a bit frustrated because we can’t really add too much to what we have without spending ridiculous sums of money.

You could argue this hasn’t quite been the case with our strikers and defence, but we spent £18m on Gray, so how do we now take that to the next level, spend £25/£30m?

The point in trying to make is that we do have a good team, and it’s by far and away better than what we had when we got promoted, but going forward any improvements we can make to it will be much smaller than over the past few seasons.

The whole 'I'm sure we'd all love to spend £60m on a striker' is such a lazy and obvious red herring, because no one was calling for that at any point, as well the people suggesting it know. There is actually quite a gulf yet between a near world class striker, and someone who can either improve on our shocking current options, or at least offer a different approach when needed, either via size/height or pace, something that neither of our primary strikers actually have/can use to much effect as it stands.

Those in the optimistic camp are seen as being blind to the negative aspects right now.
Those in the underwhelmed camp are seen as being blind to the positive aspects at the moment.

If people can see some good while others see bad it probably means the club is situated somewhere in the middle.

For a club our size, irrespective of the owners, it's to be expected to have some shortcomings.
Factor in the individual wants and expectations of supporters - well, they can't all be met because we all see things differently - then differing opinions will come to the fore.

There's nothing wrong with that at all and I don't believe I'm being told I shouldn't be optimistic just as I don't think you're being told to get happy.

I may get a whoosh here but he's listed as being owned by WFC, loaned to Valladolid for the first half of the season just gone and Almeria the second.

If he doesn't count then both Zeegelaar and Kaboul can be shot behind a blue tarpaulin like the cart-horses they are. Sorry, loaned out to some far-flung outpost on the European mainland.

No, he's definitely a Watford player, he's just not been training with the squad. He's just like the other 20 odd players that we have on loan and have never even been to Watford.

I thought you were referring to the story the Observer ran that erroneously stated he was with the squad for pre-season training, when it was just one of their journalists proving incapable of telling the difference between two young black men.

I'm with you, Opti. We'll be fine. Minus Richarlison, this is the same squad that was performing so well at the start of last season until Slither threw his tantrum.

We won't dominate the league, we won't go down, we'll have some good results and we'll get tonked by Man City once or twice.

    So 12th, basically.

And obviously once we sign Alpaca on loan when the loan window opens, we'll be set.

Don't be daft, this sort of level headedness won't fly here.

We have the worst squad, the worst manager, our players hate the club and the club hates the fans. Gino is sitting in his Tuscan villa counting his ill-gotten gains and snorting coke with Mike Ashley while they discuss their nefarious deeds.

Did I say that nath? Don’t go putting words in people’s mouths. What I’m saying is it is completely absurd to say the transfer window has been disasterous. We didn’t get a starting centre back or an upgrade on our strike force but by and large our business was good.

Which available centre backs that have moved clubs would you have had us sign that you can honestly say are not overpriced for what they are?

It really depends on a persons definition of "disastrous" though, doesn't it? I just think it's hilarious that certain people/fans get up on their high horses because they view themselves as so positive and superior to those who question the decisions of the club, then they go on to essentially slag off those who don't take that same viewpoint by labelling them as "bed wetters", "cry babies", "children", "brats", "miserable" etc.

I'm having to repeat myself but yes, I personally consider this transfer window as "disastrous" because we haven't strengthened in our two most glaringly weak areas that have clearly shown huge shortcomings for a long, long time. That to me is disastrous and puts our Premier League status at risk. That's my opinion and you are more than welcome not to agree, but I don't really understand the need to label those who hold a similar opinion to my own with what I've mentioned above just because we hold the club to a different set of standards.

  25. Problem is
    1) we did business 'too early'
    2) people have discounted Deulefeo as he was here (albeit for very few games) last season.

If we had brought a previously not-at-Watford Deulefeo, Foster, and Masina in over the last couple of days people would have jizz trickling down their inner thigh.

It’s having some balance to the argument. Everybody is disappointed with not getting a striker in, some more than others but according to some we are utterly doomed as a club not just the team which is not the case

We need to wait and see what happens this season regarding injuries because in our first season we famously had none at all. Last season could’ve just been a freak just like our first season was a freak to have virtually nobody injured.
