You are Troy, and I claim my £5.

By every metric you'd care to look at, Gray out-performed Troy. That stat showing Gray sprinting twice as much as Troy per 90 minutes is damning, as well as him having a twice better scoring rate. Troy had a dreadful season, and he's only going to get worse given his age and build - his stats every year for the last 3 years have been in decline.

I keep reading about Gray’s good ‘movement’. Great, but sadly he’s not very good at controlling a football when it comes his way.

I have just seen that Assombalonga is likely to be on his way. Would he be good enough for us. It was a bad move to sell him when we did and he seemed to be doing well, but I don't know how good he still is.

I couldn't help but notice how immaculately groomed Troy & Andre are.

But could we do with someone hairier in the area?

Where’s this reported? If we were to go for a former Watford striker then Vydra is cheaper and better. Won’t happen though

I first saw it in the BBC football gossip page. He wasn't linked to Watford, this is the report in the Northern Echo - http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/16340809.middlesbrough-consider-sam-vokes-move/
    Seems they want £15m.
He had so much potential when WFC sold him, I was just wondering if he might be a solution for us now.

It is the minimum I expect from a record signing striker.
Don't get me wrong I would love to be proved wrong and he comes good. But I can't see it.

Movement yes. Awareness no. That is the conundrum IF.

Everybody, including Troy knows he had a woeful season. Maybe he is on the decline, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He offers and brings so much more to our team than the sprinting star. Not saying that isn't important.
    Is there stats for control

I honestly understand what people are trying to say, but Gray is not and will never be the answer.

Did we even try to sign Ronaldo? It’s like our recruitment team just don’t care anymore.

I'm wondering if we're going to settle for giving Richarlison, Success or Penaranda a chance up top.

Penaranda favours playing through the middle, so who knows.

Success and Penaranda have done nothing for 2 years. By all means have them in the squad and maybe a few sub appearances and they might work their way in. But to rely on either of them as a key striking option would be madness.

Nor me. "We can't get a game for them anywhere else. We can't flog them for £ms. They're assets on the books. Guess we'll have to use them".

That's not necessarily the Pozzo way though - just look at Dje Dje, Lukebakio, Okaka, Ndong and Zeegelaar as very recent examples of players who have just been left to rot for long periods of time in a basement somewhere.

  19. barely1egal

    barely1egal Reservist

Not really sure you can include Lukebakio in here as he was always "one for the future" and is likely to have a loan spell or two before he gets a chance with us.

The rest of those were all also relatively cheap signings, whereas Success was not.

  20. Burnsy

You can definitely include him. We could have bought him and left him to develop on loan where he was or elsewhere - we have plenty of outlets to facilitate that. It’s not unfair to be confused at his signing given the wide options we already have.

I've got a feeling we will stick with the strikers we've got unfortunately.

  22. Ray Knight

Both Gray and Success were expensive so we are 'owed' some goals from them. Is Gray even back in training or does he have to stay in the USA for his court appearance? We seem to know more about his social and love life than anything related to football. Surely we have to get a striker in at least on loan.

You only have to glance at the 'Pre-Season' thread in the Main Forum to see that he is back in training. He's shown in the clubs' videos of the players on their first days back at Colney.

He is however having to lugg a ball and chain around with him which has dropped him to Deeney/Okaka pace.

I have no doubt that Okaka will be off ithis window so it does leave us with just Deeney and Gray as our only natural strikers. I’m sure we will bring in a striker, just don’t think it will be the proven striker everyone wants. More chance of it being George Puscas than someone like Danny Welbeck.

It all boils down to business. Sign Puscas for around £5mil and he has a great season, valuation quadruples for strikers that young. Has a crap season, valuation is not lost because age is still on his side, we break even.

Sign someone like Welbeck for £15-20mil and he has a great season, valuation might increase slightly but he is an known entity, no-one will break the bank for him. Has a crap season/injured throughout the season, valuation decreases and we take a hit financially. Not just in fees but wages as well since he will want more than someone like Puscas.

So while we all want a goal scorer, I highly doubt we will be signing a proven one. We can all but hope that someone like Puscas comes in and takes the bull by the horns and turns out to be a diamond in the rough.

I get what you are saying, but if we want to move up to the next level it's time we started taking those risks.

After all we are a PL team and that sort of money is no longer such a big deal if we do take loss on a proven striker, lets face it we've probably already done so with the £18m we spent on that waste of space ex scummer.

Would love us to go for Willian Jose. He looks perfect for the Premier. Expensive yes. But isn't every half decent striker.

Wouldn't object to someone like Tammy Abraham, perhaps on loan? Can play up on his own, can score goals playing in a sh*t side, he also now has a years EPL experience under his belt. Think we could do a lot worse. Far better than Gray and Deeney and would suit our style.

I am beginning to think that we might not be looking to buy a conventional striker and that we might be considering going with an adaptable 433/451 formation hence the lack of actual strikers, but vast the amount of wingers we are being connected with.

Perhaps we are hoping to find a new Theiry Henry who can be converted to an out and out striker? Alternatively we are mostly going to play a flexible forward three of goal scoring wingers who can interchange across the front line.

If something like this is not going to be our strategy, then IMO we really must get on with finding a proven goal scorer or two who can more or less guarantee 15 to 20 goals a season each.

  31. Carpster

    Carpster Squad Player

You're on to something there I believe.

I have no doubt that Richarlison could play Central of an interchangeable front three.

All ifs and buts at the moment.

  32. Burnsy

Look at the Top PL goal scorers of the last 10 years. Then accept that players who score 15-20 PL goals a season are beyond what we can afford or attract. If we can get someone who can score 10 and have a midfield capable of chipping in with plenty of goals, that’s a realistic aim. Strikers who are ready made to come in and score more than 10 (ie. Proven) will have a list of suitors if they are available. And sadly Watford FC won’t be at the top of that list.

I'm pretty certain Gray would get us 10+ goals if his ratio of goals per minutes was pro-rata'd up. There would be a few glaring misses of course too.

Ok maybe a bit ambitious for two strikers to score that many, but one reaching at least 15 would be nice :D

Looking back, the season under Quique where Deeney and Ighalo managed 13&15 goals each seems increasingly unbelievable - especially when you factor in how defensive the team was set up.

If we could somehow get those kind of figures from whoever our forwards are this season in addition to the potential in midfield................
