Beginning to wonder if Gracia is thinking of shifting Richarlison or maybe Success into a more central role.

To be fair, all empirical evidence we have been presented with up to this point suggests that Richy can in fact not play up front, and it's very hard to deny that we do in fact need a striker, as evidenced by the 11 goals the Chuckle triplets managed to register collectively over the course of the entire 17-18 season.

As for Darwin Machis, he scored 14 goals in 33 games last season for Granada from the left wing - a better strike rate than any of our strikers (even if it was in La Liga 2), and he also played 7 games as a Centre Forward in 16/17 in La Liga (although he didn't score in any of those games). He's a player who can clearly do a job up front, but he looks too slight to be a target man/lone front man/Deeney replacement.

Perhaps we'll ditch playing with a striker all together, and go down the Liverpool/Man City route of three fluid attackers, and relying on more of the width coming from the full-backs... though I doubt it.

 

Empirical evidence would have suggested Thierry Henry couldn’t have switched from wing to striker.

Richarlison is very good at getting in the right position. Shot conversion is poor, but he’s just a lad.

He’s tough, skilful and pacy which is 1 or 2 out of 3 more than any of the others.

I'm not finding it impossible to believe that we may not buy any strikers at all. I'm not saying this is the correct decision, and I would love a proven goalscorer at the highest level. But, I'm thinking the following

We only use one striker, so more than 2 'first choice' strikers (with some back up ones) isn't likely.

Deeney is expensive for his age and is on high wages so rules out most teams who wold see him as an upgrade on what they have. The club wont want him as a 3rd choice hardly used player.

Gray is probably on pretty high wages and the club will not want to lose money on their purchase so moves into the same bracket as above.

The hierarchy could conceivably point to previous good form from both players and tell the coach to re-discover that form and improve their output.

The only positive is the Pozzos know how to use the transfer / loan system better than most, so there's always a way around it.

 

I think we will buy one ‘unproven/backup’ striker and Okaka will leave. Deeney and Gray will stay. We will sign no CB’s and the obsession with midfielders will continue.

 

I believe he has everything needed to play through the centre.
I can't believe how some people are so critical of him. But believe a front two of Deeney and Gray is the answer.
His not the finished article but we are very lucky to have him. Will just get better and better.

Fits the Pozzo model. Still young, technically good who now needs to develop. Legendary name to emulate! Relatively cheap at say 3 million euros and is definitely a STRIKER!

Sadly, I'm beginning to think this is not a million miles from the truth.

 

Whilst I'd love to see one in now, waiting a bit to see what having a solid back line (that can both defend without 4 midfielders in the defensive third all the time - and complete a pass) as well as a healthier midfield might do isn't irrational. Especially with the possibility of some of real, talented competition at the wing places. A little better service might work wonders for the blokes we have. It's funny how it's been a few weeks and some people have already forgotten how utterly gash Deeney and Gray are and how Okaka is probably dead.

We need a fox in the box, not a rationalisation of our terrible situation.

Troy knows he had a bad season, but he's, 10 x the Striker than the clown Gray.

 

Disagree. Gray has far better movement and awareness. If Gray hit a purple patch Troy would be left way behind. I’m not convinced Gray can do that though especially with most of our fans on his back from next season’s opening day.

The problem with Gray is he has some awful moments, they stick in people’s minds. Then something like this shows why, in away matches, he’s a better choice than Deeney (or another striker of Deeney style), but some just won’t have it because in their eyes gray is useless and that’s the end of the conversation. Granted, we’d all take an upgrade on gray, but if that doesn’t happen then gray should be used more often. Also, I hope one criticism aimed his way isn’t about work rate and trying hard. Those sprint and kms covered stats are decent. Would absolutely love to see him have a good season, I think it’s possible but certainly not guaranteed.

 

Deeney at home, Gray away from home if no one better arrives.
