We probably didn't want to pay £25m for a kid who has only started about 20 games in his career.

He'll be well worth the money imo. Though even had we matched the offer Leicester would have got him ahead of us.

Oh yeah I think he'll be great but I'm sure the club have a few 20 year old strikers on their shortlist with just as much potential but for half the price.

Because, thankfully, our owners don't believe 12 goals in 46 games is proven enough for £25m+.

Like anyone with any ounce of sanity.

So Troy might not go to the training camp as he's struggling with 'injury'.

I always thought that morbid obesity should be described as a 'disease', but I stand corrected.

Okaka looked like he was suffering from that yesterday!

Just shows we really do need another striker...

How many minutes has he played though? I've often seen him being subbed on with about 5 minutes to go, when the match result has already been decided.

I agree. As I have elsewhere even if Deeney and Okaka stay we need another top striker. Furthermore if we are not prepared to get an Asambalonga type player from the championship for 15 million it does not bode well. For the EPL the baseline price is now 20 - 25 million. We all know it is a ridiculous market but like it or not we are swimming in a bigger sea with very little in the way of bargains. Like it or not we will be forced to pay that money for a Simeone or Ieanacho type player. Just consider the firepower the Muffins now have - Defoe, king and Wilson just up front. Unless the Pozzos are absolutely sure of a striker's ability we cannot afford to ship in another Fabbrini or Diamanté. More than happy with our business to date but concerned we are not being linked with any strikers of any pedigree or potential. COYHS

I wanted to add that as fans we are happy enough to snigger if the Chinese or Lester bid 20+ for our strikers but on the other hand are we not becoming out of touch with what the Pozzos will be looking to pay in a mad inflated market. Getting Hughes, Chalobah and Cleverly for less than 25 million was masterful but that won't happen every time.

It's the potential you're buying though, not what he's done to this point, which is good considering the minutes he's played & not going by appearances which is somewhat misleading. They think he's a brilliant prospect, and they're backing themselves that he'll produce. In which case, considering his age, he could be worth anything in 2/3 years time.

I'd prefer we keep to our current transfer strategy in terms of 'buying potential' rather than spending shitloads because a guy plays for a 'big club'.

Strikers cost more than any other position. The England U21 strikers wouldn't cost £5m ! If Gino wants to avoid a battle against the drop he will need to bite his lip and write out a big cheque for a goalscorer at some point.

Most of those appearances were as a sub - he's got a goal basically every 90 minutes in the Premier League for City (the best goals to minutes ratio of any player to have scored more than 10 goals in the Premier League). He's got bags of talent and would already be instantly better than any of our other strikers, even excluding that he still has potential to improve, and would work well as a lone front man in a counter-attacking side.

25 million for a a guy who scores a goal every 90 minutes (as a sub mind you) is pennies these days... In fact, i'd be ecstatic if we could get him; and more so if it could be for anything less than £30 million

This year £25m is the new £15m it would appear. Which makes the deals for Hughes & Nath look more like theft than transfers.

Maybe £25mil outright for a club our size is still a bit of a stretch, but more like £18-20mil with £5mil add-ons for a player of that calibre should be something under serious consideration. Heck, Palace paid £27mil rising to a potential £32mil for Benteke...

I was hoping (and still am) that the fact we got those players so cheap meant that we could afford to spend a bit more (than the usual Pozzo rate) on a new striker. I'm still pro Deeney - hope he stays and that a new guy is an addition not a replacement - but I think everybody on here agrees that we do need another attacking option. Okaka looked huge (much more hefty than Troy ever looked last season) judging by the pics I've seen from yesterdays game, but I'll reserve judgement until the season actually starts.

If Deeney goes, I believe we'll need two new strikers so for that reason I'm hopeful he's going nowhere.

That's what it costs to stay in the prem these days - have you seen the revenue coming into the club now ? He scores a few goals we'd double our money in 18 months time.

I'm sure a lot of the Deeney fat jokes are just people having a laugh, but for those that were/are adamant this was/is the case - the pic below is a screen grab from the NBC programme Behind the badge, when he was supposedly at his most rotund. Clearly, if he's fat then I'm sure we've all got serious problems with our own weight! There was an argument that he'd packed on too much muscle, but again judging by this picture there's other players in the prem more bulky/ripped than he is.

    I blame the Dryworld shirt:rolleyes:

I imagine the Pozzo's had him on their radar but at £25-£30 mill, plus add on's, signing fees, salary etc. was way beyond their budget.

Pozzo policy is always buy more for less ... and Deeney only gets sold if we have someone better already signed. We could have already but it's unlikely we'll be told until Troy has signed elsewhere.

Known to be surplus players always go for much less so media blackouts are being used more and more.

    That just hypothetical btw.

Not gone to Austria due to "minor groin" issue but Zarate with half his medial hanging out has!

Just checked on definition of "medial". It is something to do with an "extension from the middle of the body."
Worrying, and potentially very embarrassing, if true!
Can't someone just quietly tell him?

Zarate is back running. Deeney can't run with a groin injury. What's the point of him going out there if he can't run for most of the week? Plus they probably have several treatment options here that he couldn't get at a hotel in Austria.
