Has anyone built a time machine before?

If so, have you come here from the future or the past?

No but seriously.. not just a play on the title of Diamonds thread but a serious question. Well semi serious anyway..
If you could build a time machine which day or days would you choose to go back to? I mean if you just had one day only.

I think mine would be May 19, 1984.. so i could run on and head the ball off of Andy Gray's head!
Or 22nd November 1963 in Dallas. So i could be stood on the grassy knoll and tell the world what i witnessed.. or didnt as the case may be.

Just a bit of fun.. which day?

I'd head back to September 10th and warn fbi about the two towers.

Or early 1930s to assasinate Hitler when it was still possible.

Or to tell GT to see a doctor.

For the first one you would be carted off to Guantanamo Bay a few days later.

For the second one, possibly one or both of your sets of grandparents wouldn't have met each other and you would disappear in a time paradox.

    Third one I'd give you.

I thought this was resolved recently. He was shot once by the assassin and once accidentally by a secret service agent travelling in the following car when he accidentally dropped the assault rifle he leant down to pick up.

I didnt see anything about that.. but it was always felt that the most damning evidence in the Zupruder film is that you can see what appears to be Kennedy being hurled backwards by the second shot. If the second shot had come from the following car that wouldnt have been possible.

    Busted!

There was a programme on the discovery channel about it. Bullet analytics etc, and they reckoned that the fatal shot came from hickeys gun. Definitive enough for me.

He was not so much as hurled more jolted before slumping sideways. I thought he jolts backwards as the car accelerates.

    Unbusted.

    Yes thank you and you?!

Selfishly I would return to Roehampton 1988 and have another bash at the forehand volley I didn't put away to win the second set tie break in Wimbledon qualies.

Agree about Andy Gray too, although I would assist Les Taylor's shot into the net. Ah well.

Never watched it back even now.

The problem with a time machine is you may be clever enough to build a machine that can allow movement back and forth within time, but can you build one that will make sure you stay on the earth.

You can map an object with x,y,z coordinates and then a time one (t)

The universe is not fixed, we are moving rapidly through space.. if you change just your 't' co-ord, you'll find yourself floating in a vacuum.

That's why I wont use my one... I'm too scared.

This is a very good point. Which I hadn't factored in before.

My problem with time machines is that if that technology will become possible in the future, how come no one has traveled back in time to tell us about it?

I would assume that if they travelled back in time the events that took place to allow them to travel back in time would have been ever so subtly changed. This means that the the exact circumstance of them travelling back in time would never have occurred so they didn't travel back in the first place.

Travel back in time may be possible but the act of doing it would cancel out the situation that created the time travel event in the first place hence although possible, it techincally never happened or can be observed.

Time itself is measured against the speed of light. Strictly speaking if faster than light travel is cracked then you would from point A be able to see yourself at point B if you had travelled to point B faster than light. Faster than light travel relies on zero mass however so I'd go on a diet if I were you.

The faster you travel towards the speed of light the slower the speed of light is relative to you. In effect you are time travelling every time you move, the faster you move the more you are slowing time down so in effect you are travelling back in time compared to someone who is stationary.

Of course the easiest way to time travel into the future is to get in a freezer and wait until they have the technology to defrost and reanimate you.

I am aware I have just contradicted myself. I will now go on to prove that black is white and white is black and get run over on a zebra crossing.

I guess if the time machine had just been invented, whenever you traveled back in time it would be to a time before the time machine had been invented and you'd be stuck Back To The Future style!

So a time machine is only useful for travelling to the future?

Travelling back in time is physically impossible because the second law of thermodynamics prevents it. However it is strictly possible to go forwards in time, we are anyway, but at a faster rate; to do so you need to be travelling near the speed of light to have any noticeable time dilation effect.

That depends on whether you look at that it just hasn't been created in our timeline yet. If it did get created it is possible that going back creates new alternate timelines.

So the bad news is based on that theory, if we are in the original timeline... you will never see a timetraveller, and if you watched someone disappear in their time machine looking to go back in time.. you will only see them disappear to never return

Just theories.. with no more, or less, credibility than any other.
So what's the good news theory?

PS Why would it need to be invented 'in our timeline' Surely if you have invented time travel such things are irrelevant?
