Walter Mazzarri - Ex Manager

Discussion in 'The Hornets' Nest - Watford Chat' started by wfcmoog, Jan 1, 2017.

  1. we are very easy to play against

press us high, and stick 2 players on Troy Deeney

  2. Had we won all the games we lost, which could easily have happened in different circumstances, I'm sure the attitude of fans would be even more completely different.

What is important to remember is that we live in the real world though. Not the Imaginarium of of doom and despair that so many of us can't seem drag ourselves away from.

Your argument is three months old, and you are saying nothing now you didn't say back then. Every point you make you made then, but the fact is, Walter is still here and we are comfortable, and the PL still don't deduct points because you think we don't deserve them.

Feel free to carry on. But don't blame anyone for pointing out the facts to you.

One day you'll pop your head out of the sand and wake up, but until then I guess you'll also keep making the same points as you have done for the past 3 months.

  4. Excellent summary of my post. Thank you.

I agree we have not played well on the whole this season and their have been some very disappointing performances, some poor performances have even resulted in wins (Mboro for one). However we must remember that we are team and squad that is building, we have been hit by loads of injuries and as a result had an inconsistent starting 11 throughout the season - Our more creative exciting players are injured or young and will be inconsistent. A settled team goes a long way to bringing success and good performances to boot - we will be fine moving forward we just need a bit of continuity over the summer + a 4 or 5 good quality signings

I've had some time to reflect since the last game.

I was in the out camp after he rested players against Millwall and thought he needed them for Arsenal which the vast majority of us thought was going to be a mistake. Well we were wrong and he was right, we beat Arsenal then Burnley and with that it looks like we will be safe. As Jumbolina said earlier people think our players are better than they actually are. They are average. Gomes, Kaboul, Britos, Behrami, Capoue (has the occasional going day), and the bench. Wouldn't get into the better sides in this league. We have also been unlucky with injuries. Arguably our 2 most creative players Amrabat and Pereyra been out for a while yet we still picking up the points we need. As a club we are growing but it's going to take time, Premiership survival is key, and Walter is going to achieve it so it would be unfair to sack him now. Some games have been difficult to watch granted but without our 'flair' players it will be. Just got to stick with it.

Our summer recruitment was below par again we get players who are either not good enough or get injured. But Wally is going to keep us up it would seem so that's fine with me.

Its up to the Pozzos to decide if he's still here next season.

I'm in the Mazzarri in camp and explained why on the Mazzarri out board a moment ago. Don't fancy double posting.

Probably for the best. You don't want to derail this thread about tossing.

Probably best for your next 'post combo' if you explain why you're Mazzarri in on this thread and then offer a disclaimer on the Mazzarri out thread. Otherwise we'll have hb1 identifying some sort of new 'trend' despite the tiny sample size.

  10. I think that once you factor in the catastrophic injury situation that still overshadows the season, Gino will most likely come down on Walter's side.

The difference between Walter and Quique is difficult to measure, and their seasons should not be considered like for like if only because of the injuries.

Most of all, despite our lack of elan, the reason I would be OK with Walter next season, where last year I was desperate to get rid of Quique in the closed season, is because when we start a match, we do so with the intention of winning it. Our performancez may not be the best under Walter, but they are better than the total negative dross of the second half of last season, when a win or a draw really was an accident.

So I'm at least thankful for that. There is better than Walter out ther, and I suspect there is also better in him.

Are his instructions lost in translation as I have to say last week he did spent most of the 2nd half jumping up and down pointing at the players to push up?

I'm not (currently) of the out brigade. What do I make of the Wobby piece? Well nothing yet. Let's see what tomorrow brings. It's all very well and good sounding off (in translation) about 'the players won't do what I tell them' but if you can't make/coerce/encourage them into doing what you want and expect them to do then maybe you ain't the man for the job. At least our job.

He's an excuse maker. Everything is everyone else's fault. Had we won 6-0 I'm sure he wouldn't be blaming players for not following instructions. When we win it's because of him, when we lose it's because of the players.

Even the Zarate injury, he laid the blame firmly with the player for wanting to stay on.

Some people just can't be managed. Given that our head coach turnover has been so frequent, it's not unlikely some of the squad just do what they want at this point. The same issues have been on show for so long that it's pretty obvious the blame doesn't lie with the coach. Perhaps if the players start to realize the head coach can actually outlive them at the club, they might start doing what they're asked.

I'm not in the Walter out brigade either. But I think he has real problems providing a positive environment at the club. What he is describing here is a typical reaction to being ahead in a game that we don't expect to win - retreat and protect.

It wouldn't surprise me if he preaches fear, the sort of stuff we see on here.

"Listen lads (translated of course), we know we are only good enough to be a mediocre/average team in this division, we will get more injuries, more poor refereeing decisions and we only have £100m so can't spend as much money."

"If we continually pass to their players by mistake, don't worry, it is only what we can expect. If you resort to hoofing it, it is only what we are capable of. You see, you are just not really that good."

"So we are up against superior players on Saturday and the odds are stacked against us - so don't expect to win. We can only hope to get a lucky goal and hang on grimly for a sneaky win."

"Know your place as averagely mediocre, we need some realism here!"

"Also, if we do lose, no worries, just look a the league tables at Luton to remember just how far we've come - and then smell the coffee."

    "Who's this Loooton?" says Holebas.

In fact, he doesn't even need to preach anything, he can just read out the comments on this forum, that'll bring 'em down!

Interesting. You seem to think his expectations are too low. Yet in the lead up to the West Ham game he said:

Which bit of that do you disagree with? If anything it mirrors a lot of the things I've read on here and hardly looks like an example of someone with low expectations - more so given two of the games he's critical of were wins.

What Walter needs to understand is that motivation doesn't come from sticking to plans or orders. It comes from belief, confidence in their own ability and the knowledge that we are good enough to beat any team and that we need to beat them today. In your quotes, he is a only talking about losing concentration. Very little about how good they are, etc, etc. Maybe those players are so concerned with their "lack of ability" and the plans and orders and so surprised that they are winning that they lose their concentration on followings orders and just try and cling on.

Mindset makes 90% of the difference, that is the difference between Leicester last year and Leicester this year, with 95% of the same squad.

I don't know, I and not in those team talks, but if they reflect anything like I see on this forum, particularly in the match threads, then I believe that a lack of positive "mindset" is holding us back seriously.

And what you need to understand is mazzarri knows much much much more than you about football management.

That's why he's got a team to 12th in the premier league, and you sit at home moaning to strangers on the internet in your underpants.

The same thing applies for that other soft ****, hornetboy1

I honestly cannot fathom how anyone still wants this man at the club.

  27. Yep. Not calling for his head, but happy for him to go a the end of the season. Unless there is significant improvement in tactics, and some proof that they will take us forward, I can't see Gino wanting to see this type of Football next season for the same level of returns it is bringing us.

Injuries have been a problem, to some extent still are, but I can't say Walter hasn't been given a chance.

Maybe he'll turn it round, but I don't care whether its him or some one else now. I trust Gino to do the right thing in terms of getting rid (or not), but I hope he will not make the mistake a third time of hiring a non-English speaking manager who is not prepared to learn the language; possibly that lack of commitment is a good indicator of the dedication and determination of a head coach who wants to lead a team in the premier English league.

Hallelujah! This is certainly what I have been getting at in respect of the language issue. Not xenophobia, as some have suggested. Simply - showing long-term commitment to the job. It just suggests to me that his heart isn't in it.

  29. Just want a manager who tries to play entertaining football

Couldn't care less what language he speaks

This 433 is more horrible to watch than the previous 532, may as well bring that back

It's not so much the sacking of him which would upset me as what it would represent. When we've got yet another summer of the squad being reviewed by a new coach, new tactics and systems being introduced and some of the ill-disciplined players dodging the chop again I hope people start realise the futility of lumping every complaint at the feet of the head coach.

For someone learning a new league who inherited some issues and yes, the ridiculous injury crisis that came up too, I'd say he's at about par now. I would like to see what he can do with a season of experience of the players and the division under his belt. If the answer is nothing inspiring we can still bin him.

  31. Agreed about the commitment. Despite sticking up for him to be given a chance with the injuries, I have been saying for months that his lack of English is the most serious issue, and probably key to whether he stays or not. Other factors are starting to take over now though, from my point of view.

  32. I'm not averse to this, but it's Gino that has to think the same way, and I am not sure if he will like what he is seeing. Positive that we are scoring goals, but from their first today, we never looked like a team that was likely to win it.

Dear oh dear. Not this again.

We got beat in a seven goal thriller, mainly thanks to the keeper's howler.

How that is Mazzarri's fault is beyond me.

    Give the man time.

Agreed. I'm not a huge fan of Mazzarri, but people are fooling themselves if they think that replacing the head coach again is going to change anything and that we won't be in exactly the same position next season. The problems at this club (if you can even call them that given where we are) go beyond whoever happens to be the head coach.
