Boothroyd has only said he'd let Ashley go if he can secure my services first. However the sticking point is the wages being offered, I want £80,000 a week plus a boiled egg, but Watford will only offer me £75,000 without a boiled egg. Therefore we are at an impass and Young will have to stay.

Ash has great ability and is going to be one hell of a player within next 2 seasons!
However, £5,000,000 for someone who hasn't performed that well recently (in my opinion) is a very tempting offer...he has only performed to his best in a few games this season (Bolton, Fulham, Newcastle and Boro) and he's still at a stage in his career when he can belly flop and do nothing for a few seasons!
If memory serves me correctly GT turned down £6,000,000 for Noddy from Spurs when we came down from the Prem in 99/00? What a huge clanger that was!
If we get an offer of more than £5,000,000 he has to go...end of! We can bring in a couple of very decent strikers with that money, with change left over!

I'd hazard a guess at Spurs being one of them and all of those bids being derisory at about 2.5 million.

Tottenham, Everton and maybe arsenal, they've all shown interest
£2.5M - £4M most likely

Just seen Aidy's interview on skysports news and he went very silent when he was asked if Watford would sell if a big offer came in!
Ash will be off if anyone offers over £6,000,000

I should say, that'd be a great deal. to be honest it may be worth cashing in on him now while his stock is high. If he stayed with us in the Chumpionship next season he might not be the same player and we could be lucky to get half that.

I think it could also depend on if we can get anyone decent in return either permanent or on loan.
Also if it was Arsenal there may be the possibility that we could sell Ash but keep him til the end of the season.
But at £6mn the price is too good for a club such as ours to ignore.

My thoughts exactly! As i stated earlier in the thread his career can still go down hill, consquently losing his value! He's not as great as people make out and he's not irreplacable, not by any means!
As you say, best to sell him now whilst his price is over inflated!

If Liverpool want Young, they clearly haven't done their homework. I doubt Young will ever be good enough to play for a club like Liverpool. I don't rate Jermaine Pennant but I have to say that he is a far better player than Young is. Who would have thought a couple of years ago that we could be getting £5 million for Ashley Young? I didn't.

Sexybadger it's all to do with the stupidly inflated transfer market these days I think. It seems as the day has worn on all the Young rumours have started to gather more and more momentum. It's seems like something is up and as they say there's no smoke without fire. I think common sense should be the order of the day here, as I said before we're likely to go down so if the right deal is set out (e.g Money + a loan as Bubble has mentioned) then it could be right for all parties.

Have to disagree...Young is a better player! He can play on either wing, he can also play upfront or just off the front man! Pennant can play in one position and his left foot is for standing on! Ash has two good feet, he's quick, he's clever and he's got good technique! Twice the player Pennant is or will ever be!
Put Ash in a good footballing team with better players around him and watch him blossom!

I think it was Berko that mentioned the loan move mate! Good idea aswell...perhaps we could get an Arsenal youngster until the end of the season plus £5,000,000-£6,000,000!? Would be good business!
As you say, common sense must prevail here!

I stand corrected, apologies Berko!
Theo on loan, Ash till the season end and anything over £5million, yes please, I would even throw Smith in for free (they must need a boot cleaner / ball-boy)

Now you know I am a RL fan Paddy. I am just trying to ascertain how badly Jon wants to move Ash on:)

Would love the guy to stay as I believe Aidy in time will develop him further and build a side round him.
However money is the power and any silly offer / deal should be taken for the long term benefit of the club.

I was told today that Boothroyd has rejected bids from Fulham, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal. Wenger offered £4million and offered to loan Young back to us till the end of the season.
Wenger hasn't even got enough spare cash for the train fare to Watford.

Aidy just confirmed on 5 live radio that Ash has been tapped up by more than one Premiership club.
Ash has given him the details - may be an opportunity to try a little persuasion if the clubs have any affordable players.:D

its such a tough one this.... Young is indeed our best player, but sometimes the money really is worth it.
That said, im not comfortable in knowing that an aledged £5million would come into the club and dissappear into someones pockets.
With minimal monies spent in the summer, I would argue that there should be up to £10mil to spend in this window.
If Ash goes for £5mil, would we spend £15mil??? Obviously not.....
If Ash goes for £5mil would we spend £10mil in the window????
Still cant see it!
So we sell Ash for £5mil and spend £6mil maybe £7mil on new recruits with the excuse being that we couldnt attract anyone else worthy during the window.
I can see this happening.... God i hope it doesnt!
The positive thinking course wasn't a success then?

I was on my way to the college but then i missed my bus and i figured everyone would hate me being late on my first day so I sat in the park instead and fed the ducks half a packet of spicy Nik Naks.
I dont think they were fond of them as they swam off plus one of them gave me a funny look. Think I might have poisoned them.
As I said to the other half V Wigan.... "come on, its not going to re start, lets just go". And she said, "buts lets just wait and see, you never know"
So when the Wigan players walked out with their tracksuit tops on I said "There, See I told you.. now bloody look, we're gonna have to wait for ages for nothing" (at this point she cops an eyeful of Danny ****tus breasts) and says "Blimey he's big isnt he"
We've been sleeping in separate rooms ever since.

I'm sure Premier League rules state if you sign a player he is unable to go back on loan to the club he has left (or any other club in the same league for the matter). The reason for me thinking that was when Spurs first tried to sign Paul Robinson (of Leeds) with the intention of loaning him back.
I think we will only sell should the offer reach £8 mil, players in the lower leagues without any premiership experience are being talked about as being worth £5 mil+ (e.g Nugent) surely Young is worth more than him? Our financial position is no longer dire, even if we go down, we can hold out for more.
Young is not the same as Smith, who always had poor finishing and distribution in my opinion. Although Young may have been disapointing to some it is only because we expect so much of him. Just look at how much worse we were against Sheffield United without him and Bouazza (another player i'm suprised no one has enquired about). His best position is on the right, not upfront. If we go down and interest in Young decreases that can only be good because it will give us a greater chance to push on in the Championship
