Handball - presumably this is something which is going on around the world to the complete ignorance of British people. Is this a real sport? It's like one of those features on BBC Breakfast at the weekends where they send the sports correspondent out to a leisure centre to try out the latest new sport which everyone can take part in, regardless of age or fitness.

From what I have seen, it's pretty much big all around Europe apart from here. I think most of us only know about it due to the fact it's how Schmeichal pioneered his goalkeeping skills from playing handball. Very popular in Germany for example where a lot of football clubs have handball divisions.

Wot made u say that ?
Of course it's a sport. Huge across Europe, Kris will tell you how the Danes love it and also very popular in Brazil and Argentina. All major football clubs there and in Germany and Spain have allied handball divisions.
All of these sports in the Olympics are deserving of praise. Every competitor has had to train hard physically and mentally and refining their skills over the years. Just because it's not football does not make it any less valid which seems to be a view expressed by many unfortunates in this country whose idea of sport is confined to association football.
Looking forward to rugby sevens in 2016. I do have doubts over the validity of some disciplines in the Games though such as beach volleyball and windsurfing and the absence of others like squash.

Bullfighting is huge across the Spanish speaking world. Doesn't mean I have to recognise it as anything other than a nonsense though.
I don't care for handball, beach volleyball, normal volleyball or even water polo. It is biased, I admit, mainly because they are sports where team GB has no shot.

PS - and it's not all about football. I am not at all interested in Team GB's efforts in the football, although I am developing an affection for the Ladies' side. At least they are getting exposure on a large stage, which means a lot to them, unlike the men, who are incapable, in most cases, of appreciating the significance of their role.

Why don't we be pioneers and set up the first handball club with affiliations to an existing football club like they do in Europe. Certainly looks like a brilliant sport

Coverage here is decent. 3 dedicated channels during the day and every event streamed live on the NBC website as well. Various other bits and pieces on other channels. It's very, very, Team USA biased (as in, they only really show events when an American athlete is competing) though - but that's to be expected and I'm sure it's similar back in the UK. The women's football gets a lot of coverage. None of the interactive push a button for the event you want malarky though, which is a shame.

It is popular in Denmark for sure, however I feel we have been overexposed to it of late.
I like hockey.Softie sport.
I advise you to find a channel which shows Denmark play Hungary right now (it's halftime though). Denmark are tournament outsiders and Hungary have a good side. Mens and womens handball are quite different. Mens' is pretty much wrestling with a ball and two goals added. Extremely physical and tough. Women's handball there is a little slower and it is often easier to catch the technical finesses.
Handball is very much about pre-defined patterns and plays, defensive strategies and very much the ability to think on your feet.

badminton, for me it is just a game to play in sommer on the beach. I find it weird and funny as an olympic sport.
As for handball, I started playing it at school and went on for several years afterwords. I love it, but I understand that might be boaring to watch, it is one of those sports that are exciting only if you play.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'd guess that at minimum 60% of all the women athletes in all team sports in the States are gay. Minimum.

All sports are silly.
The idea of kicking a spherical object between two sticks to gain some kind of kudos is no more sensible than trying to hit three sticks placed in the ground with a small ball while another person tries to prevent you from doing so with a plank of wood.
We place importance on the most ludicrous of things to stop us thinking of our uselessness in the universe and our slow crawl towards death.

Just watching Volleyball, why does one player have a different kit on to the rest of the team?
I think the commentators refered to that player as the 'libero', or floating player.
Presumably this means she can assume any position on the court while others have fixed points.
http://volleyball.about.com/od/volleyball101/a/Libero.htm
What is the libero?
The volleyball libero is a defensive specialist position in indoor volleyball. The position was added to the game in 1999 along with special rules for play in order to foster more digs and rallies and to make the game more exciting. The libero remains in the game at all times and is the only player not limited by rules of rotation. He usually replaces the middle blocker position when they rotate to the back row and never rotates to the front row himself.
The libero is chosen by the team before the match or tournament and that designated player must remain the libero for the entire match or tournament. If the libero is injured, he/she can be replaced by any player who is not on the court, but that player must remain the libero for the remainder of the match.
What does the libero do during a play?
The libero is responsible for a great deal of the passing in serve receive. Often the libero will be responsible for a much greater part of the court than his teammates. The libero is in the game to add ball control, so his main responsibility is to pass the ball well so the team can run the offense. On defense the libero needs to dig well, getting a hand on every ball he can to keep the play alive. Since the libero has no attack responsibilities, he must chase down every ball he can. He may also be responsible for setting if the ball is dug by the setter or out of the setter's range.
ForzaWatford
30-07-2012, 10:54 PM
Thats what I was wondering too.
I googled it, and I still don't really understand.
he Libero
In 1998 the libero player was introduced internationally, the term meaning free in Italian is pronounced LEE-beh-ro (rather than lih-BEAR-oh); the NCAA introduced the libero in 2002.[15] The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. This replacement does not count against the substitution limit each team is allowed per set, although the libero may be replaced only by the player whom they replaced. The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court.
The libero is, generally, the most skilled defensive player on the team. There is also a libero tracking sheet, where the referees or officiating team must keep track of who the libero subs in and out for. There may only be one libero per set (game), although there may be a different libero in the beginning of any new set (game).
Furthermore, a libero is not allowed to serve, according to international rules, with the exception of the NCAA women's volleyball games, where a 2004 rule change allows the libero to serve, but only in a specific rotation. That is, the libero can only serve for one person, not for all of the people for whom she goes in. That rule change was also applied to high school play soon after."
oxhey67
30-07-2012, 11:00 PM
As I understand from also googling it each player rotates around the various positions from one point to the next but the Libero is not part of the rotation.
She is limited though to the defensive positions at the back of the court.
