I understand that he was involved with helping capture the games, but so was Princess Anne and Tony Blair, but why the hell has he a part to play in the opening ceremony ?

If we won right to host the World Cup or the European Championship then I could understand him being involved, but his not an Olympian and therefore for me shouldn’t be involved. There is no sponsorship or branding for him to endorse and the world wide viewing figures aren’t going to increase just because Beckham is there.

Wrong person at the wrong place at the wrong time

imho he's probably one of the most recognised sports persons in the media today. That, and his appearances involved with obtaining the Olympics and I think he's justified some sort of contribution.

He will do very well out of that , another £10 mil in the bank account , he is a brand and maybe without his image London would of not been awarded the games.

^This is true. As an entertainment spectacle if you compared say Steve Redgrave doing something instead of David Beckham, most of the world would be thinking Steve who? whilst Mr Beckham is even a household name here in Finland, a country where football is not that big.

As i say if it was the World cup or the Euros then it would make sense.

Like Birdy says its a nice little way of paying him off for his work

It also means he is one step closer to obtaining the Knighthood he craves for. What are the odds for the New Years honours list ?

Was born in the area of the Olympic park and is arguably Britain's biggest sporting icon, hope he isnt the one lighting the cauldron though.

They won't let him close unless he agrees to not wear hair spray , fire hazard.

They must find some event which Becks can have a crack at. Archery or something. Would be good for the fans.

I agree but then the other contenders have been having such a public spat maybe they think Beckham with a 12 year old kid is the best option.

He will be the one lighting th cauldron.

It will be done with David kicking a burning football, all bendy like, into the cauldron.

Either that of Wiggins, on fire, cycling up a ramp and jumping his bike into the cauldron to light it

Well they are having a cricket match in the start up show , how about David is batting , he is bowled , hits a reverse sweep high into the air , the ball changes into a burning ball of fire ,

and lands in the cauldrun to the sound of Chariots of Fire.
