...is in need of some work.
I've decided to look at getting a rowing machine and I reckon on a budget of up to £200 although as little as possible would be preferred.
Anyone got any hints/tips/recommendations?
My thoughts are to go for an air or magnetic resistance one, space/noise isn't really a problem and I have motivation issues so something which will give me readouts targets etc would be good.
Looking at these which seem to have decent reviews.

It's boring, £200 wasted. you will use it twice a day for a week, then once a day, then it will gathering dust.
Cut down the beer and save the money.

Sit-ups and press-ups.
Cheaper and more effective, if you do it right.

As a budding personal trainer, my advice to you would be to get your lazy, fat a*se down the gym and do it properly! :)

I bought a rowing machine from Argos for about £100, used it once, got a refund.
It was cack.
Instead I went running, which is free.

Aquadrome in Ricky have a rowing club and it's right next to the pub, the pub is where all the lads chat about rowing and tell rowing stories whilst sipping their ale.

Sorry, but rubbish.
Extremely limited and doing sit ups, apart from burning a few calories and tightening the muscle under the flab, will do little to solve the problem.
Need a proper balance of diet and exercise. Depending on the speed he wants to lose the belly, can either be weeks or months, depending on how much he wants to adjust his lifestyle.

Best idea i have read on this thread so far. Add an hour of swimming here and there also and you will notice the difference im sure.

Swimming is totally the best thing you can do for your body in terms of exercise. It works pretty much every muscle and feels friggin awesome!

Join a local rowing club. Its actually suprisingly theraputic (spelling?) and they will teach you the correct technique - most gyms teach you incorrectly. Either that or the club I went to were having me on...
You might want a back-up plan for the winter though!

If you are going to do something about your beer belly we need of course to see some pics of before and after, real pics not something you have a scanned from muscle weekly, it will need to be authorised by either your Dr, lawyer, electrician or even your garbage removal officer and of course dated.

I have explored so many areas around Watford by heading with my map and following bridleways and paths. Seen things I would never have seen, and its nice how cyclists out and about usually give a nod to each other to say "nice one"

So it's a bit like people who drive around in old classic Rovers, they give that little Rover wave and that knowing nod.

I facking hate bus drivers, they drive like winkers and when they do what you mentioned it makes my blood boil. Who the fack are they to stop and chat and hold their passengers and other motorists up? Winkers.

The Lido is a good suggestion. Knowing where you live, it's a straightforward bike ride to get there through those woods, then a few circuits of the Lido and home again. An excellent workout.

I think it's much nicer to get your exercise in the fresh air and for free than to pay to go to a gym. It's better for your psychological well-being as well as your body.

You can always have a break for an ice cream and a ride on the little train as well.

So Meister , what's your plan ?
Hornmeister
24-06-2011, 12:11 PM
Dunno.
Deffo not joining a gym, would rather go outside and get some fresh air cycling or walking and I begrude paying that much when I can invest in equipment myself.
Shin splits prevents me from running. I'm thinking I'm more likely to keep it up if I can hop on a rowing machine for 15 mins a day, whilst my dinner is cooking.
Still pondering.

I got terrible shin splints, but you can get through them.
I bought special insoles, and ran a small distance twice a week, making sure I had a proper running technique. Now I rarely have any problem with them. Playing sports instead of running lessens their impact too, as running is quite harsh on the shins.

How about swimming and follow PG's advice and also build up your lower leg muscles ?

Building up my legs is the last thing I want to do. got pins like tree trunks from years of cycling 50 miles plus a week.
Used to play indoor footy but couldn't get socks big enough to go round my calves & shin pads:dismay: so ended up getting my shins kicked to shreds.
Mind you they used to call me the bulldozer because I tackled somone and we both went flying through the fire escape.

Update:
A couple of weeks done. I've rowed at least a mile most days. cut down a bit on the snacks & stuff and tried to do a bit more walking. That's half a stone lost.
Don't look any smaller but feel fitter for it and sleeping better.
No doubt all the good work will be undone at the beer festival and follow up rugby weekend:dismay:

You say you don't look any smaller, but did you do any before photos?
It's difficult to see incremental change, but if you had a picture of you at full size, I bet there is an improvement.
Keep it up. One night on the beers won't undo all your work.
Just hit the rowing machine the next day to row off your hangover. You'll feel better for it anyway and you'll burn some of the GBBF calories.

Don't forget, muscle weighs more than fat, so you've probably lost even more, and just toned up a little bit.

Correct. Unless you've got the tension turned way up (I haven't) its fitness and calorie burning only. It's a low impact exercise, one of the reasons I decided to do it as my joints are pretty much knackered.
