"The US will do well in 1998: We could even win!"
"The US has a great chance in 2006!"
Whatever anyone tells you, always add 10 years to it.
Now here's some real entertainment:

Love the entertainment, you certainly have better streakers over there, (a few less clothes would have helped though)!
After seeing you at the last World Cup I'd say you won't win it this century. Seriously. I'd say by sheer fluke we should win it at least once in 23 attempts so the answer to your queston is NO.

Like I said, whatever date of World Cup victory for the US you ever hear, add ten years to it and you'll be more accurate...
No doubt 2006 was a failure, though our group was much tougher than the most of the others. I will remind you that no team other than the US was able to avoid defeat at the hands of Champions Italy. US advances if they were in, say, Mexico's group.
The US has enormous untapped soccer potential, most of it tied up in other sports like basketball and baseball. The US has the potential to grow exponentially, and already there are more American kids playing soccer now than there are English kids in total.
On the other hand, to play devil's advocate, it seems England is mostly maxed out in their potential, with mostly only fine tuning possible.

USA 2-0 Poland at halftime.
Both goals off of set pieces kicked by Donovan and scored by Bocanegra and Onyewu.

jay doing well?
He just got in around the 60'.
US scored again on an Eddie Lewis free kick straight in...3-0 to the US.
Poland is totally outclassed in this one.
Jay nearly scored just now...

Final:
Poland 0-3 US
i'd say easily. if the world cup was played out by ten year olds america would win every time. its just that there are laws against that kind of thing. but if anyone can lobby for a brighter future, its the US!

Zowie! My sarcasm-o-meter went off the charts with the last sentence!
i like the way they lobby. its so unashamedly corrupt, like a man committing a sex crime in a church.
but i do believe you guys will win meaningful silverware/goldware before us

We have so many people and so much leisure time and such a huge fixation on sports achievement, I have no choice but to agree.
My only question is how long will it take?
20 years. i'm basing that on beckham having a meaningful effect on football continuation beyond the ages kids traditionaly switch to hockey or whatever. so you get the first generation in ten years and when there are all american football heroes for kids to emulate, ten years later you get the next world cup winning batch

OK, next question:
England SHOULD destroy the US at home at Wembley in May, but will they?
I'm clearly biased, but Beckham seems to be the only player on the team that actually threatens to take control of the game. In the Euro games, England was toothless when he didn't play, and effective when he did. There are obviously GREAT English players on the team, but the whole doesn't equal the sum of the parts...

I think Englands chances of winning a major tournament will diminish as time goes on unless we see a wholsale chnage in the set up or running of the game, we have a supposed golden generation of players, who are in my opion nothing special, and certainly don't warrant the praise that has been heaped on them.
Will the US beat us to the prize? Maybe, International football on the whole is a lot closer, and with out knowing exactly how popular football is in the States now (i Imagine it is still on the increase) I feel they have the potential to improve to the stage where they become contenders.
I look forward to ending this discussion within the next 50 or so years...........

It's really just starting to get popular...when you get to see that and how people are just getting now getting into it as a spectator sport...that's where the tremendous future potential of the game here can be seen.
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends in a tie game. Especially if we insist on playing Rooney up front.
Our Under-21s would batter the USMNT, but I'm not so sure about the first team.
And as for the world cup, Jay and Jozy leading the Stars n Stripes to glory in 2010?

I thought the U.S. were very unlucky in the 2002 World Cup when they were beaten by those damned jammy Germans.
They're best game was aginst Portugal, they completely outclassed them in the 1st half.
We won't mention France '98 though, *ahem* Iran!

France was a disaster.
FYI, Demerit is playing this second in Barbados for the US team.
It's just about halftime, but if you are desparate for footy, it could be the ticket.
US is up 1-0, and the US beat Barbados 8-0 last weekend.

Spain v Italy is probably a bit of a better way to satisfy the thirst for football.;)

Watching both, and I can say Spain/Italy sucks balls.
EDIT: that said, I recognize the quality of the football in Wien. Spain is crafty, but Italy is just a monolith.
