You couldn’t repeat the Fizz’s signature move these days. Most performers start off with fewer garments so the reveal would probably have to be cocks and fannies.

Probably best we don’t let Bucks Fizz give it another go.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching that for it's complete madness. What a competition. Netherlands COMPLETELY bonkers and all the better for it.
I agree with Ireland being right up there, also like Austria and Georgia. I'll listen a few more times but I still think we're in with a great chance this year.

Probably the gimmick we need to win! Especially if the ladies have cocks and the boys have fannies! (woke Britain)

I think Olly's song is a bit meh. It's an OKish pop song but it has very little about it that's memorable. I think some of his other songs have been better. Once again it sounds like we've concocted something we *think* sounds a bit Euro, based on about 5 years ago and thus we will be down in the doldrums again.

I don't know how popular an artist Olly/Years and Years are on the continent as that could bring in some votes, but on the basis of the song itself, I can see us pulling in a few 2 or 3 point votes and not much more.

I asked Michael, his neighbour (Mr. Hamerra), if this was true and he says categorically that it isn't.

I'm a bit late to the party this year, as I've been away but this is my summary of Eurovision 2024:

    Candidates

Switzerland – A unique and catchy song, but it is a bit drum n bass which traditionally struggles at Eurovision. Sounds like a winner, but I’m not sure how well some of the less Western influenced countries will back it. The staging looks disappointing though.

Croatia – I think it will be a crowd favourite, it’s high energy and a little bit quirky. Whether the juries will rank it highly I’m not sure.

Ukraine – I really like this one, it’s an interesting mix of haunting vocals and rap. Combined with the automatic vote winner of any Ukrainian entry, I think this may do better than expected. One of the singers is cute too, so there’s that.

    Outside Bets

Lithuania – I’ve not seen anyone mention it, but I actually quite like their entry and the staging is decent. There’s also an opportunity for an audience participation clap, which is always a vote winner (see Mahmood – Soldi).

Austria – The return of 90s trance, the arena will be buzzing and hopefully that’ll translate over the TV too. It’s not typically Eurovision, but could go down well.

Netherlands – At the opposite end of the spectrum, this is sickeningly Eurovision. For me it’s way too cliché and obvious, but maybe the wider audience will love it.

Sweden – Never rule out Sweden. The song itself is alright, it’s standard Swedish dance but nothing too groundbreaking. However, the staging is very, very good and may woo enough people to be near the top of the scoreboard.

Italy – A decent Mediterranean influenced song, performed by a pretty lady. I think it’ll get a lot of votes from the Southern countries, but I don’t see it challenging the very top of the leaderboard.

    Flops

Ireland – I’m sorry to say I don’t think it will make it past the Semi-Final. The vocals aren’t bad and the song is different, but it’s way more Halloween than Eurovision and I just don’t see it being popular.

Iceland – For some reason they’ve mimicked the UK’s 2021 nul-point entry Embers. An interesting choice, it seems a bit like the Will Ferrell film was based on reality!

UK – Olly is undoubtedly talented and big things are expected, but the song is flat. I think it will fade away and be overshadowed by bigger, louder, more exciting songs.

    My prediction:

    1. Switzerland (1st Jury, 4th Public)
    2. Ukraine (2nd Jury, 3rd Public)
    3. Croatia (8th Jury, 1st Public)
    4. Italy
    5. Sweden

I've since watched the 30 second clips of the rehearsals:
    - Sweden don't have the props from their qualifier, so the staging won't be as good.
    - And the UK have actually gone big on the staging for once. I still maintain the song is a bit flat, but the staging looks to have ensured it won't be forgotten... I think that pushes our entry from a flop into the top 10.

Ollie’s song starts great then goes nowhere. It needs to do something at the end, rather than taper off. Hope he does a key change on the day.

Might get some points because surely people love It’s a Sin.

Great post @scummybear Very good and astute analysis.

I’m in agreement. I can see Switzerland winning for the first time since 1988, although I’d prefer Croatia to be a first time winner.

I believe Sweden kick off the competition, and it’s very very unusual for the opening act to ever win.

Italy are always consistent. I’m with you, I love the Austrian dance entry and she’s not too shabby on the eye either!

The uk entry is very underwhelming. An opportunity missed. To think we were favourites too when it was first announced Olly was to be our entry. But we slipped down to 13th favourites once the song was revealed. As you say, hopefully the staging can elevate it to the top 10 but it still feels like we’ve squandered a good chance of a much higher finish,

I fear there will be a lot of trouble on Saturday night around the Israeli participation, should it qualify. Like many other people, I was horrified by the Hamas attack but remain equally if not more troubled by the Israeli response. Crimes against humanity are undoubtedly being committed in the name of alleged self-defence, but as with banning Russia too I’m not sure Eurovision is the ideal platform for protests against world events. Maybe Israel would have been better to have withdrawn, because I fear it’s going to expose their singer to a lot of anger and protest. Better probably if she doesn’t pass through the semi final.

A very enjoyable show last night I thought. Scott and Rylan presented it well and the songs were varied and strong.

Nothing changes my mind so far that Croatia will win on Saturday. Interesting to see how the other favourite, Switzerland, performs tomorrow.

I found Olly’s staging too claustrophobic, and obviously it heavily targets the gay vote, but I’d be disappointed if we don’t get a top 10 finish this year. A lot of hard work and creativity has gone into it, something that’s not always been the case.

Onto the second semi now, and I’m sure the sideshow of the Israeli participation.

Yes, for the first time ever! A new innovation. It’s actually a big five, plus the hosts. Last night we saw UK, Germany and Sweden. Thursday will be France, Italy and Spain.

A few small surprises last night. Australia was elimated, as were Poland, Iceland, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
